As someone who has always been captivated by stories of courage, resilience, and humanity, I am beyond excited about this upcoming Netflix production. Having recently immersed myself in the powerful narrative of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” I can’t help but feel a deep sense of anticipation for another masterpiece that promises to tug at our heartstrings.
Following the success of the Academy Award-winning film “All Quiet on the Western Front” and the Emmy-winning series “The Empress,” Netflix is moving forward with their next German production, a yet-to-be-titled feature based on a true story involving the migrant rescue ship, the Luventa. Louis Hofmann, the rising German star from “All The Light We Cannot See,” will lead the film’s cast.
Markus Goller, who recently had a successful run with his movie “The Irony of Life and Death” in Germany, selling over 1.2 million tickets, is now helming the Netflix production.
The movie recently began filming in Berlin and Malta, telling the story of a band of young Berliners associated with the German NGO Jugend Rettet. Unable to idly watch as countless refugees perish while attempting to reach Europe by sea, they take decisive action. Despite their lack of experience, they are fueled by passion and courage. They initiate a crowdfunding campaign to purchase an old ship, then venture into the Mediterranean on a mission to save thousands of lives. However, their efforts quickly challenge their comprehension of law and justice.
The screenplay was jointly penned by Oliver Ziegenbalg and Michele Cinque. The duo’s work was further enhanced by Oscar-winning talents Christian Goldbeck and Volker Bertelmann, who handled production design and music. Their successful collaboration on “All Quiet on the Western Front” was noteworthy, with Frankie DeMarco orchestrating the cinematography.
The movie is being made by Christopher Zwickler at Flute Film, as well as Goller and Oliver Ziegenbalg at Sunnysideup Filmproduktion. Michele Cinque serves as Creative Producer from Lazy Film in Italy. Skadi Lesske and Astrid Weber handle the hair and makeup, while Mika Braun takes care of costume design.
Hoffman stars opposite Mala Emde, Katharina Stark, Frederick Lau, Maria Dragus. The cast is completed by Trevor Magaya, Kathy Etoa, Felice, Saibon Wang, Joone Dankou, Merlin von Garnier, Luisa-Céline Gaffron and Omid Memar as well as Corinna Harfouch, Ulrich Matthes, Franka Potente, Katja Riemann, Frank Plasberg, Herbert Knaup and Eleonora Romandini in guest roles.
