Netflix Sets Next German Film About True Story of Migrant Rescue Ship Iuventa, Starring ‘All the Light We Cannot See’ Breakout Louis Hofmann

As a passionate movie enthusiast with a penchant for captivating narratives and exceptional storytelling, I can hardly contain my excitement for this upcoming Netflix production! The true tale of the migrant rescue ship, Iuventa, brought to life by the talented Louis Hofmann, is sure to resonate deeply.

Following the success of Netflix’s Academy Award-winning film “All Quiet on the Western Front” and Emmy-winning series “The Empress,” the streaming service has chosen their next German production. This is an as-yet-unnamed feature film, based on a true story about the migrant rescue ship called the Iuventa. Louis Hofmann, the rising German star from “All the Light We Cannot See,” will lead the cast in this movie.

Markus Goller, who recently had great success with his film “The Irony of Life and Death,” which sold more than 1.2 million tickets in Germany, is now at the helm of a Netflix production.

The movie is currently being filmed in Berlin and Malta, telling the story of a group of young Berlin residents who are affiliated with the German NGO Jugend Rettet. Unable to idly watch as countless refugees perish while trying to reach Europe by sea, they decide to act. Inexperienced yet fueled by passion and bravery, they initiate a crowdfunding campaign to purchase an old ship. They then sail into the Mediterranean on a mission to save thousands of lives. However, their actions soon challenge their understanding of law and justice. The summary states: “As they venture into the Mediterranean to save thousands, their efforts test their notions of law and justice.

The screenplay was jointly penned by Oliver Ziegenbalg and Michele Cinque. Notable Oscar winners, Christian Goldbeck and Volker Bertelmann, were recruited for production design and music composition – they were the award-winning duo from “All Quiet on the Western Front,” with Frankie DeMarco overseeing the cinematography.

The movie is being made by Christopher Zwickler at Flute Film, along with Goller and Oliver Ziegenbalg at Sunnysideup Filmproduktion. Michele Cinque from Lazy Film in Italy serves as the Creative Producer. Skadi Lesske and Astrid Weber handle hair and makeup, while Mika Braun takes care of costume design.

The main cast features Hofmann acting alongside Mala Emde, Katharina Stark, Frederick Lau, and Maria Dragus. In addition, Trevor Magaya, Kathy Etoa, Felice, Saibon Wang, Joone Dankou, Merlin von Garnier, Luisa-Céline Gaffron, Omid Memar, Corinna Harfouch, Ulrich Matthes, Franka Potente, Katja Riemann, Frank Plasberg, Herbert Knaup, and Eleonora Romandini take on supporting roles.
