Bridgerton continues to be a huge hit on Netflix. The latest season, Season 4, just released its first part and centers around Benedict, the second oldest Bridgerton brother. Although the creator has said Season 5 will feature either Eloise or Francesca Bridgerton as the main character, some hints in Season 4 suggest who will likely take the lead.
As a total fan of period dramas, I’ve been completely hooked on Bridgerton. It’s based on Julia Quinn’s novels, which center around the Bridgerton family and their romantic lives – the matriarch, the Dowager Viscountess, really holds things together. Each book – and now each season of the show – focuses on a different sibling finding love. Everyone’s wondering who will take center stage in Season 5, and honestly, there’s one character that just makes the most sense to me.
Eloise Is Perfectly Poised to Be the Lead in Bridgerton Season 5
Eloise Bridgerton is ripe for a love story, and for a couple of key reasons. First, her book, To Sir Phillip, With Love, is the fifth in the Bridgerton series, suggesting it was always part of the plan. More importantly, she’s now the only Bridgerton sibling still looking for a spouse, and her mother won’t be patient forever.
While there’s been speculation, these reasons aren’t strong enough to make Eloise the central character in the next Bridgerton season. The true reason she’s the perfect choice lies in her existing storyline and how the show has developed her character over time, making her the most suitable lead.
Eloise wasn’t like other young women of the time; she rejected the idea that a woman’s only role was to get married and have a family. She believed women were capable of much more. That season, she also became determined to uncover the identity of Lady Whistledown, the anonymous author who was revealing all of the ton’s secrets.
As viewers of Bridgerton discovered, Eloise’s closest friend is revealed to be Penelope Featherington at the end of Season 1. In Season 2, Eloise continues trying to uncover the identity of Lady Whistledown, and her search leads her to Theo, an employee at the print shop where the gossip column is produced.
Their connection had the potential to become something significant, but societal expectations of the time prevented Eloise and Theo from being together. Starting with Season 3, Eloise’s storyline felt less focused, and some viewers felt this made her character less appealing.
Eloise’s seeming lack of focus might be intentional, and the latest season of the show leans into this even more. While Season 3 centered on Colin Bridgerton, it also highlighted the strong bond between Eloise and Penelope, who initially connected through their shared disinterest in romance and finding husbands.
With Penelope now married and a mother, Eloise feels the loss of her closest friend and someone she could always trust. Things get even harder when Penelope starts becoming closer to Eloise’s sister. This makes Eloise feel more alone, especially after she learns that her brother, Benedict, has found love too.
Eloise and Benedict had a special connection. Being outsiders helped them become close, even closer than they were to their other siblings. However, with Benedict now finding love and planning to marry, Eloise may find herself feeling more alone.
Eloise’s Loneliness Could Lead to Her Own Story in Bridgerton Season 5
Jess Brownell, the creator of Bridgerton, has said that future seasons (5 and 6) will focus on the stories of Eloise and Francesca. The show originally planned to follow the book order, starting with Daphne’s story and then Anthony’s. However, Season 3, the first season Brownell led, made some changes to that plan.
The latest season of Bridgerton surprisingly shifted focus from Benedict’s planned storyline to Colin’s. This suggests the show isn’t strictly following the book order. We’ve already seen the beginning of Francesca’s story – her meeting and marriage to Lord Kilmartin – and it’s possible she’ll be the central character in Season 5.
This makes her a strong choice for the role. In the Bridgerton books, Eloise starts a secret correspondence with Sir Phillip and eventually runs away to meet him without telling anyone. With Eloise becoming increasingly distant from her loved ones in Season 4, this could be the ideal time for her to do so.
With her main support gone and feeling increasingly isolated, it’s logical she’d begin reaching out to others in secret, hoping to find a connection. Given her growing sense of not belonging in high society, a decision to run away would be a natural progression of her story.
Continuing Eloise’s storyline for another season wouldn’t add much and might even bore audiences. However, giving Francesca’s story more time to develop would be a good move. Everything is already in place—particularly in the current season—to set up Eloise Bridgerton as the next sibling to find romance in Season 5.
