As a seasoned cinema devotee with a penchant for all things comedy and a soft spot for Netflix, I must say this latest announcement has me positively giddy! Having witnessed firsthand the sheer brilliance of John Mulaney‘s live performances during the “Everybody’s in LA” series, I can confidently state that his upcoming live weekly talker is set to be a game-changer.
Netflix is planning to broaden its comedy content in collaboration with comedian John Mulaney. Building on the success of last year’s live “Everybody’s in LA” series, Netflix will debut a weekly live talk show hosted by Mulaney next year. Bela Bajaria, chief content officer, shared this news at the Bloomberg Screentime event in Los Angeles, expressing her enthusiasm about the project. In essence, for 2025, Netflix is set to produce a dynamic live talk show featuring John Mulaney, which Bajaria is particularly excited about. “John Mulaney? Amazing!” she said, emphasizing their long-standing relationship with him. They have previously collaborated on his stand-up specials, and during the Netflix is A Joke Festival, he hosted a live talk show called ‘Everybody’s in LA.’ Bajaria attended several tapings of this show, finding it daring, innovative, fresh, and unpredictable. She anticipates that it will be enjoyable to work on another live show with him.
Bajaria expressed that the viewership for “Everybody’s in LA” wasn’t enormous, but it was considered a valuable trial and learning opportunity for what’s to come next. He pondered, “So, if we create a weekly live talk/variety show, what shape would that take? I believe the live element will be intriguing to explore. Moreover, he possesses an extraordinary talent and is incredibly innovative.
Netflix has faced difficulties in the realm of talk shows, as previous efforts led by hosts such as Hasan Minhaj didn’t quite catch on. However, Bajaria expressed that it’s important for them to remain daring and take chances: “I believe we should keep being bold and taking risks. It would be too simple and safe to conclude, ‘talk shows didn’t succeed, so let’s avoid this.’ Instead, we should continue to push boundaries.
Netflix eventually verified the information, mentioning that the Mulaney series is scheduled to debut in the early part of 2025; however, specifics about it remain confidential.
John Mulaney will serve as the host, co-showrunner, and executive producer under his Multiple Camera Productions. Known for his stand-up comedy, Mulaney’s previous specials on Netflix include “John Mulaney: Baby J” (2023), “Kid Gorgeous” (2018), which won Emmys for their standup performances, as well as “The Comeback Kid” (2015). In addition, his 2019 variety special “John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch” is also available on Netflix.
As a devoted Netflix enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the exciting expansion of live content they’re pursuing. They’re currently in negotiations with BuzzFeed to air live adaptations of “Hot Ones,” Sean Evans’ popular YouTube talk series. Moreover, they’ve been beefing up their sports offerings with golf, tennis, and boxing matches; hot dog eating contests; the “Roast of Tom Brady”; stand-up specials from comedy greats like Chris Rock and Joe Rogan. The streaming giant is also diving into live wrestling programming and planning to broadcast a full set of NFL games on Christmas day. What a time to be a Netflix fan!
