Filming has started on the next season of Squid Game, the popular Netflix series that won six Emmy Awards. The show has been a huge success for the streaming service since it first came out in 2021.
Netflix has greenlit a new Korean series called The Dealer, and production is now underway. The creator of the hit show Squid Game is producing this latest drama for the streaming service.
Netflix has announced the main actors for its upcoming crime drama, The Dealer: Jung So-min, Ryoo Seung-bum, Lee Soo-hyuk, and Ryu Kyung-soo. The story centers on Geonhwa, a talented casino dealer whose dream wedding is disrupted, leading her to use hidden skills and navigate the risky world of gambling – all in an effort to still get married.
Jung So-Min, who you might recognize from dramas like Love Reset, Alchemy of Souls, Love Next Door, and Would You Marry Me?, plays the character Geonhwa in The Dealer. Netflix describes Geonhwa as a very skilled and experienced dealer who has managed to stay above the temptations and problems of casino life.
Lee So-hyuk will play Jo Jun, a highly skilled gambler known for his unreadable expression. Ryu Kyung-soo will star as Choi Wooseung, the fiancé of Geonhwa, and a detective who is relentless in his pursuit of suspects, often displaying a contrasting personality at work.
The upcoming film, The Dealer, marks the directorial debut of Choi Young-hwan, a cinematographer known for his work on popular movies like Smugglers, Veteran, Tazza: The High Rollers, and The Thieves. The film is being produced by Firstman Studios, the company behind Squid Game, and will also involve Squid Game‘s director and creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk.
Could There Be a Squid Game Spinoff in the Future?
Netflix’s Squid Game ran for three seasons, with the last one launching in 2025. The third season started strong, attracting a large audience in its second week.
Season 3 concluded the story of Squid Game, but viewers wondered if there might be additional shows set in that universe. In July 2025, the creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, revealed he already had a concept for a potential Squid Game spinoff.
He mentioned a potential idea for a follow-up to the show, but not a direct sequel. He envisioned a spin-off focusing on the three years between the first and second seasons, exploring what the recruiters – like Gi-hun was doing – were up to. Specifically, he thought it would be interesting to show the lives of people like Captain Park and the masked men outside of the game, detailing their activities during that time period. He described it as a rough idea that might be developed later.
A premiere date for Netflix’s The Dealer has not yet been announced.
