Due to the lackluster performance of the latest “Fear Street” film, there might be some changes in its upcoming plans. The recently released “Fear Street: Prom Queen,” which debuted on Netflix on May 23, 2025, has received unfavorable reviews. Critic Ferdosa Abdi from Ebaster gave it a score of 6 out of 10. Currently, the new horror movie has a Rotten Tomatoes critics and audience score of just 27%. It’s unusual for both critics and audiences to dislike a film this much, indicating that people are not fond of “Fear Street: Prom Queen.
The response to the movie “Prom Queen” has been quite underwhelming because all the other films in the “Fear Street” series, produced by Leigh Janiak and released on Netflix, were highly successful. However, unlike its predecessors, “Prom Queen” seems to only loosely connect with the storyline of the earlier movies, which many fans find disappointing. Consequently, the future direction of the “Fear Street” franchise might need to be reconsidered due to this lackluster reception.
The Fear Street Franchise’s Best Future Is To Return To The Lore Presented In The Previous Trilogy
Fear Street Is A Franchise Full Of Interesting Lore
While it’s possible to enjoy “Fear Street: Prom Queen” without watching the other “Fear Street” films first, there are numerous nods to the initial trilogy. The Camp Nightwing massacre and characters like Sarah Fier are referenced in this film. Consequently, it can’t be argued that “Fear Street: Prom Queen” disregards the first three movies entirely. However, some fans and critics have voiced their dissatisfaction over the movie not being more closely tied to the original “Fear Street” trilogy.
Every Fear Street Movie | RT Critics Score | RT Audience Score |
---|---|---|
Fear Street Part One: 1994 (2021) | 84% | 63% |
Fear Street Part Two: 1978 (2021) | 88% | 81% |
Fear Street Part Three: 1666 (2021) | 89% | 76% |
Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025) | 27% | 27% |
Instead of focusing on characters introduced earlier in the trilogy, Fear Street: Prom Queen introduces a new group of protagonists and weaves a tale about a string of murders that occur during Shadyside High School’s prom night in 1988. Although Prom Queen shares the same timeline as other Fear Street movies, it essentially functions as an independent slasher film. However, Prom Queen was not originally intended to be the fourth installment of the Fear Street series. Following the release of the initial trilogy in 2021, there were various ideas for the future direction of the franchise.
Despite Janiak expressing a desire to carry on with the series following the initial trilogy, she didn’t participate in the making of “Fear Street: Prom Queen”. Contrarily, it was Matt Palmer who directed this film, having co-written the script with Donald McLeary. While “Prom Queen” aimed to launch a new phase for the franchise, it seems that plan hasn’t been successful given the current low status of the series. As such, it might be beneficial for Janiak to rejoin the franchise and produce Fear Street movies that align more closely with the original films’ lore.
Fear Street Already Teased Established Killers Worth Focusing On
The Original Fear Street Trilogy Introduced Many Killers
Following the debut of the first Fear Street trilogy, Janiak expressed a desire to create a film centered around the character Harry Rooker, famously known as The Milkman. This proposed movie would delve into the origins of how Harry Rooker transformed into the ruthless killer, The Milkman, in a 1950s slasher setting. Given that The Milkman appeared in all three films from the original trilogy, this potential film could have had a closer connection to Fear Street’s mythos compared to Prom Queen.
It appears that Janiak was eager to create a film based on The Milkman character, but there have been no recent announcements regarding this proposed Fear Street movie. Besides The Milkman, there are numerous other murderers from the original Fear Street films who could potentially be the focus of future movies, including the Humpty Dumpty Killer and The Grifter. Given the popularity of the original trilogy, I think it would be wise to concentrate on characters that fans are clamoring for more content about. Notably, after the release of Fear Street: Prom Queen, it seems that the franchise’s next film must aim to be a significant success.
