Netflix Is Losing Taylor Sheridan’s Hell or High Water

The crime drama Hell or High Water, created by Taylor Sheridan, is available to stream now, but it won’t be for much longer. It’s leaving the platform soon, so subscribers should watch it while they still can.

Netflix is removing several popular movies at the end of the month, including the critically acclaimed Hell or High Water on May 1, 2026. Other titles leaving the streaming service on that date are Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, David Ayer’s Fury, Steven Spielberg’s classic Jaws, and the first five Mission: Impossible films.

Taylor Sheridan’s Near-Perfect Western Is Leaving Netflix

Released in 2016 and written by Taylor Sheridan (known for shows like Yellowstone and Tulsa King), Hell or High Water is a film about two brothers—played by Chris Pine (Star Trek) and Ben Foster (Lone Survivor)—who resort to robbing banks in an attempt to keep their family’s ranch from being foreclosed on. Hot on their trail are two Texas Rangers, portrayed by Jeff Bridges (The Big Lebowski) and Gil Birmingham (Yellowstone).

David Mackenzie, who directed Perfect Sense, helms this film, which features Marin Ireland (known for The Umbrella Academy), Katy Mixon (Mike & Molly), Dale Dickey (Breaking Bad), Kevin Rankin, Melanie Papalia (You Me Her), and Amber Midthunder (Prey). Taylor Sheridan also makes a brief appearance as a cowboy.

Hell or High Water Impressed Nearly Every Critic on Rotten Tomatoes

The film Hell or High Water was a critical and commercial hit. Made with a budget of $12 million, it grossed almost $38 million. It received overwhelmingly positive reviews, boasting a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 89% audience score. The film also earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay for Taylor Sheridan, and was named one of the year’s top ten films by the American Film Institute – a sentiment widely shared by critics.

Renowned critic Richard Roeper was deeply moved by the film Hell or High Water, calling it both beautiful and brutally honest. He gave it his highest rating – four out of four stars – and immediately wanted to rewatch it, a testament to its powerful and memorable quality.

As a film buff, I see Hell or High Water as a really key piece in Taylor Sheridan’s early work. It falls right between Sicario and Wind River, and honestly, it feels like where he really started to hone the style that would make Yellowstone such a huge hit a couple of years later. Since then, he’s mostly been focused on TV, creating a bunch of successful shows, but I’m excited to hear he’s getting back to features with a new film about the Alamo.

Stream Hell or HIgh Water on Netflix until May 1, 2026.
