Netflix Gaming And Generative AI Chief Has Left The Company

Netflix‘s Vice President of Gaming, Mike Verdu, has departed from the company following his 2021 hire to develop their gaming strategies. This departure marks another significant change within Netflix, a streaming service that has experienced recent downsizing in its gaming sector.

As per the official record, it has been confirmed that Verdu departed from Netflix. His role included launching fresh and adapted mobile games onto the Netflix platform for premium users, as well as overseeing the company’s internal game development efforts.

During his tenure at Netflix, Verdu underwent multiple promotions and role transitions within their gaming division. Initially, he served as the Vice President of game development, where he played a pivotal role in establishing Netflix Games by setting up studios and publishing branches. Subsequently, he was promoted to the position of Vice President of games, during which he spearheaded cloud streaming trials across various countries on TVs and PCs.

In his final position at Netflix before departing, he held the role of Vice President for General Artificial Intelligence in gaming. This change occurred in November 2024. Some might have perceived this shift towards AI as a strategic adjustment for Netflix, but Verdu clarified in a LinkedIn post that this transition was part of a pre-planned strategy, stating, “The changes you’ve observed over the past few months were actually a carefully orchestrated transition.

In the month of July 2024, Alain Tascan, a former executive at Epic Games, was appointed as the President of Gaming for Netflix.

Under the Tascan umbrella, Netflix has recently scaled back some of its gaming ventures. They’ve disbanded their in-house AAA development team, known as Team Blue, and have significantly reduced their library of interactive video content. Additionally, they’ve let go of a number of employees at Night School Studios, an acquisition made in 2021, and have decided not to release six games previously planned for their platform, including Thirsty Suitors and Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings game.
