Originally, it was one of the most legendary robot anime series ever made, and its debut was subsequently expanded upon in a trilogy of films. These movies offer an effortless means to revisit the original narrative, but unfortunately, they, along with another, will soon be leaving their current streaming platform.
For quite some time now, the timeless Gundam anime movie trilogy and the iconic Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack have been available for streaming on Netflix. Regrettably, these titles will only be on the platform for a short while longer, as their stay is set to end by the middle of June. However, there are other installments from the mecha anime series that will remain accessible on Netflix.
The First Four Gundam Anime Movies Are Leaving Netflix Next Month
Since June 2021, fans have had the opportunity to stream the initial four movies from the Gundam franchise on Netflix. The first three instalments formed a trilogy, encompassing Mobile Suit Gundam The Movie, Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow and Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space. These adaptations revisited the original Gundam series, editing certain scenes for a more streamlined narrative. However, elements like the Gundam Hammer were omitted as they were perceived as unnecessary and overly reminiscent of Super Robot anime, contrasting with the intended grounded tone. These adaptations revitalized the original anime’s story, maintaining its enduring popularity despite initial lackluster success. Subsequently, the first original Gundam film was released, serving as a conclusion to many characters introduced in the 1979 anime.
Starting in June 2025, after several years on Netflix, the streaming service will bid farewell to the Universal Century Gundam anime films, specifically The First Gundam Trilogy and Char’s Counterattack. Given their movie format, it’s relatively straightforward for both new viewers and long-time fans to watch them before they depart. It’s worth noting that Netflix continues to offer other Gundam productions such as the two Mobile Suit Gundam SEED anime series, the 2024 sequel movie Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway (a follow-up to Char’s Counterattack), and the Netflix original anime Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance. It remains unclear whether Netflix will renew the license for these specific Gundam movies before June 17, 2025, leading some to speculate that this decision may be due to changes in management of the platform.
