As a seasoned film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersing myself in the rich tapestry of global cinema, I can confidently say that Netflix’s Reel Life Film Camp initiative in Indonesia is a game-changer for the region’s film industry. Having traveled through Southeast Asia and witnessed the raw talent and passion for storytelling, it warms my heart to see such an ambitious program taking shape.
Netflix is continuing the momentum from its 2023 Series Pitch Lab achievement by organizing the Reel Life Film Camp, a joint venture with the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival (JAFF). This project, supported by the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity, represents an extension of their presence into Indonesia, following earlier activities in Thailand.
75 individuals were chosen out of approximately 600 applicants spread across Indonesia for an online course covering different aspects of the film industry, such as production assistance, accounting, post-production, sound design, special effects, and acting. Of these selected participants, 24 proceeded to face-to-face sessions in Yogyakarta from November 29 to December 2 during JAFF, which was followed by networking events at the JAFF Market’s Talent Day.
Ruben Hattari, Netflix’s director of public policy for Southeast Asia, stated that the purpose of Reel Life Film Camp is to foster exceptional talent within the Indonesian film industry by providing them hands-on experience on Netflix Indonesia productions in areas such as production, accounting, and post-production.
Participants in the program gained insights from the creative team behind “The Shadow Strays,” led by director Timo Tjahjanto. He explained that their goal was to create “The Shadow Strays” with a cinematic style, but thanks to its availability on Netflix, such cinematic experiences are no longer confined to the big screen and can now be appreciated in various ways by viewers worldwide.
The plan is being launched given that Indonesia’s film industry expects a substantial expansion in the future. According to PwC, the sector currently provides work for approximately 387,000 individuals, with estimates suggesting an additional 616,000 jobs could be created by the year 2027.
Tia Hasibuan, producer from Come and See Pictures, highly commended the structure of The Reel Life Film Camp program. She expressed that this program has been eagerly anticipated as a means to attract new, gifted individuals into the Indonesian film industry. What makes it particularly appealing is its combination of online, offline, and hands-on learning experiences, making it easier for us to spot and recruit talented individuals who can contribute significantly to our future projects.
The program is part of Netflix’s broader commitment to creative equity, which has invested over $41 million globally, supporting more than 13,000 people through 200-plus programs across 50 countries. The company reports that over 450 program participants have secured positions on Netflix productions in various roles.
