Netflix has been publicly stating its commitment to gaming for some time, but recent events suggest they may need to adjust their plans. The company has closed Boss Fight, the game studio responsible for the mobile game based on their hit show, Squid Game.
David Rippy, CEO and co-founder of Boss Fight, announced the news on LinkedIn and expressed his thanks for the opportunity.
Rippy shared a message thanking everyone for their support today after some difficult news. They expressed gratitude for their time at Netflix, highlighting the amazing people they worked with and the games they created, like Squid Game Unleashed, which topped charts in 26 countries. Rippy also encouraged people to consider colleagues from Boss Fighters for any job openings, praising their talent and professionalism. As for their next steps, Rippy, Bill, and Scott are planning to rest before deciding on their future projects and welcome hearing about any interesting opportunities.
Last summer, Greg Peters, who is co-CEO, president, and a director at Netflix, announced the company would be increasing its focus on gaming, hoping to find new ways to make money. Just recently, Netflix added five new games – Lego Party, Boggle Party, Pictionary: Game Night, Tetris Time Warp, and Party Crashers – which can be played on TVs using your phone as the controller.
Netflix once intended to create a large-scale, online multiplayer shooter, led by a team with experience from popular games like Halo and Destiny, including veteran Joe Staten. However, the project was cancelled in 2024, along with the studio developing it. Alain Tascan, a gaming executive at Netflix, later explained the reasons for this decision to Bloomberg.
Tascan explained they didn’t want this decision to seem like they were abandoning large, ambitious projects. He clarified it was specifically about the type of game not being a good fit for their platform. While the development team was highly skilled, Tascan felt they weren’t the right partner to help them fully showcase their talents.
