Netflix Boss Explains Why Company Killed The AAA Multiplayer Game From Halo Veteran

As a passionate gamer, I was eagerly anticipating the AAA multiplayer shooter that Netflix was developing with Halo and Destiny veteran Joe Staten on board. Unfortunately, my excitement came to a halt in 2024 when both the game and the studio were unexpectedly shelved. In an interview, one of Netflix’s top gaming executives, Alain Tascan, shared that this project didn’t align with the company’s strategic vision.

Tascan explained to Bloomberg that this move shouldn’t be interpreted as us abandoning large-scale, ambitious games,” said in simpler terms. “The issue wasn’t about our intentions, but rather the type of game we were working on. It didn’t quite fit with our platform. The team was exceptional at what they did, but we wouldn’t have been the ideal partner for them to showcase their abilities and expertise.

The change in focus from this particular game occurred during a broader restructuring within Netflix’s movie and television departments, where the strategy is moving towards fewer, cost-effective productions that prioritize superior quality.

In the future, Netflix intends to concentrate on four primary categories of video games: social/party games, children’s games, story-driven games, and popular/mainstream titles. These games will be designed for mobile devices and can be streamed onto TVs through Netflix’s own streaming technologybut they won’t be accessible on Xbox or PlayStation gaming consoles.

As a dedicated gamer for quite some time now, I’ve been thrilled to witness Netflix stepping up their game (pun intended). They’ve been experimenting with streaming games right onto our TVs and computers, not just limiting themselves to mobile gaming.

Tascan stated that it’s similar to a musician; initially, we imitate a few aspects, and eventually, we’ll discover our unique style. The timeframe isn’t clear yet, but I’m optimistic that we’ll uncover our distinctive voice.

This week, Spry Fox unveiled Spirit Crossing on Netflix, whereas Yu Suzuki, the designer of Shenmue, introduced his latest game, Steel Paws, in February.
