As a devoted streaming enthusiast, I can say that Netflix is undeniably the global leader in video streaming, with an extensive library of captivating content. However, there’s an exception to this rule – China. In the words of co-CEO Ted Sarandos, not a single episode from their massive collection of shows manages to bypass their stringent censorship committee.
It’s no overstatement that Netflix boasts over 300 million paying customers, thanks in part to its strict password policy and popular series such as Stranger Things, Wednesday, and Squid Game which have solidified its position as a leading player on the international stage for viewers.
Nevertheless, with a population of approximately 1.4 million people, China poses a distinctive challenge for western TV shows and movies due to its stringent content restrictions. For instance, in 2010, James Cameron’s Avatar faced a ban, primarily due to concerns it might stir up civil unrest. More recently, Thor: Love and Thunder is among the numerous films that have been subjected to censorship because of LGBTQ+ scenes.
Netflix may need to modify or remove parts of its storylines to suit the Chinese market, a concession they seem willing to make. In a recent interview, Sarandos expressed no reservations about this adjustment.
China rejected Netflix despite efforts
On the 23rd of April, I found myself sharing insights at Semafor’s Global Economic Summit, where I revealed a past endeavor: an attempt to partner with creative minds from China, right here at Netflix.
Although there have been years of dedicated work and collaboration with the Chinese video streaming service iQiyi, Ted Sarandos admitted that not a single episode of any Netflix series has managed to secure approval.
Fifteen years ago, many people believed it was an impossible endeavor. However, we made several attempts for two years to achieve it.
For any episode of a Netflix series to be aired, it first needed to pass the censorship test. However, over a span of three years, none of the episodes managed to clear this hurdle.
Ultimately, it became clear that, being an American corporation, their streaming service was not well-received in that particular region.
Sarandos added, “They showed no desire for our presence in China. For a whole decade, I observed everyone tirelessly working towards gaining access there, only to find themselves in the exact same position as me: nowhere.
He emphasized that Netflix stands advantageously during the ongoing trade disputes, explaining, “We are among the few U.S. businesses with no ties or involvement in China.
Speaking on the subject of job creation in America often overlooking the entertainment industry, Sarandos pointed out, “It can be easily underestimated.
Between 2020 and 2024, Netflix is estimated to have injected approximately $125 billion into the US economy. Furthermore, it created a total of around 190,000 jobs, including 140,000 production jobs and 50,000 in various states where films or television shows were filmed throughout the U.S. (all 50 states).
A significant portion of our investments lies within the United States, yet it often seems underestimated as an industry. At times, we feel slighted in trade agreements. The importance of this sector sometimes gets overshadowed, and unfortunately, it’s not given its due recognition. Rarely do you see a president posing on a movie set during their tenure.
