Carley Fortune’s popular novel, This Summer Will Be Different, is being turned into a 10-episode TV series for a streaming platform.
I’m really excited about the upcoming series, This Summer Will Be Different! I heard they’re shooting on location in Prince Edward Island and also in Toronto, which sounds beautiful. The adaptation is being led by Dane Clark, who I know from Suze and One More Time, and Linsey Stewart – she’s done great work on Workin’ Moms and North of North. They’re not just writing and running the show, but also executive producing it with a fantastic team including Fortune, Jennifer Kawaja, and Elise Cousineau, all through Sphere Media. It sounds like it’s in really good hands!
This Summer Will Be Different Explores Forbidden Romance
Netflix’s This Summer Will Be Different is a coming-of-age romance that unfolds over several summers on Prince Edward Island. The story follows Lucy as she enters her twenties and experiences her first serious relationship with her best friend’s brother – someone she always thought was off-limits.
I first discovered the magic of Prince Edward Island through L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables, and that feeling deepened when I actually visited with my best friend in my twenties. That trip – the island’s incredible beauty, the kindness of the people, and the lasting friendships we made – really became the heart of my new movie, This Summer Will Be Different. I’m so excited to partner with Netflix to bring this big, romantic story to life and share the stunning landscapes of PEI with everyone.
Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury, who are leading the Canadian adaptation, said they immediately recognized the need for a dedicated team to satisfy Carley’s enthusiastic readers. They described working with Dane, Linsey, and Sphere as a fantastic experience and expressed their excitement about bringing this story, which celebrates Toronto and Prince Edward Island, to life on screen.
Netflix’s Canadian Slate Continues to Grow
Netflix and Sphere have teamed up again, following the success of their thriller series, Wayward. Wayward was a major hit, staying in the global top 10 for five weeks and reaching number one in 35 countries. Their new project, This Summer Will Be Different, is part of a growing collection of series that also includes Who Killed the Montreal Expos?, Unt. Newfoundland Project, The Granville Girls, and North of North, which is currently filming its second season.
The book This Summer Will Be Different came out on May 7, 2024, and quickly became a bestseller, appearing on lists for both The New York Times and USA Today. This continues the success author Fortune has had with previous popular novels like Every Summer After, Meet Me at the Lake, and One Golden Summer.
This Summer Will Be Different does not yet have a streaming premiere date set at Netflix.
