Netflix and TCM: The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship?

Fans of Turner Classic Movies (TCM) might soon see the channel run by Netflix. While not initially announced, a Warner Bros. Discovery spokesperson confirmed that TCM will be included in the deal where Netflix is acquiring parts of Warner Bros.’ studio and streaming operations. This is likely a positive development, as TCM relies heavily on movies from the Warner Bros. library, but the future of the channel still remains somewhat unclear.

Since Warner Bros. Discovery made a deal with Netflix, the future of traditional TV channels like CNN, HGTV, TNT, and Cartoon Network has been uncertain. That’s because Netflix isn’t planning to buy these channels. Instead, Warner Bros. Discovery plans to group them into a separate company called Discovery Global Networks next summer. The remaining parts of Warner Bros. Discovery – including the film and TV studios, HBO, and HBO Max – will continue as Warner Bros., still led by CEO David Zaslav.

So, it looks like after Netflix buys out David Zaslav’s share, they’ll be getting everything – not just the big stuff like the film and movie studios and HBO. I was really relieved to hear that includes DC Comics and, most importantly for me, Turner Classic Movies! A Warner Bros. Discovery rep told Vulture that TCM will be part of Warner Bros. Studios after the planned split in 2026, which is great news for classic film fans like myself.

Before Monday, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and Netflix hadn’t said anything publicly about what would happen to Turner Classic Movies (TCM) after a potential sale. However, this recent announcement aligns with earlier reports. Shortly after WBD announced plans to split its company in June, the New York Times and others indicated TCM would be part of the networks group. WBD later clarified to Variety that TCM’s programming and direction would be handled by Zaslav and Warner Bros. Pictures leaders Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, with some business support from the Discovery Global team. This new statement confirms those leaders will continue to oversee TCM after the company split next summer – and crucially, that TCM will be part of the company Netflix is looking to acquire.

If Netflix acquires TCM as part of the Warner Bros. deal, it will also control the HBO linear channel, keeping HBO and HBO Max connected. Because Netflix doesn’t have experience running traditional cable channels, it might temporarily partner with Discovery Global to manage HBO and TCM’s relationships with cable companies. Building a team to handle these tasks – like dealing with cable affiliates and ensuring signal delivery – would likely be a distraction for Netflix. Currently, Netflix isn’t sharing its plans for operating linear HBO or acknowledging the TCM acquisition, which is understandable given the deal is so new and the actual transfer of ownership is still a ways off.
