Neon Buys ‘Shelby Oaks,’ Horror Film From YouTube Creator Chris Stuckmann

As a huge fan of independent cinema and a devoted follower of Chris Stuckmann‘s insightful film critiques on YouTube, I am beyond thrilled to witness his incredible journey into feature filmmaking with “Shelby Oaks.” The fact that this is his directorial debut is not only impressive but also a testament to his passion and dedication towards storytelling.

Following the triumph of “Longlegs” over the weekend, Neon revealed on Tuesday that they have obtained the rights to distribute “Shelby Oaks” globally. This project is the first feature film directed by Chris Stuckmann, who is both a filmmaker and a popular YouTube creator. The genre for “Shelby Oaks” is a blend of documentary and found footage. Its world debut is scheduled at Fantasia Festival on Saturday. Neon will be in charge of releasing the film in US theaters and managing international sales.

“In ‘Shelby Oaks,’ actresses Camille Sullivan (‘Hunter Hunter’), Brendan Sexton III (‘Don’t Breathe 2’), and Sarah Durn (‘Where the Crawdads Sing’) star. The story revolves around Mia, played by Sullivan, who desperately seeks her missing sister Riley (Durn), whose disappearance was captured in the final episode of ‘Paranormal Paranoids.’ With Stuckmann’s film amassing a remarkable $1.4 million through a successful 2022 Kickstarter campaign in under a month, it holds the title as the most-funded horror film on the platform. Notably, Stuckmann, known for his critiques of films, video games, anime, and TV shows on YouTube, has also written books such as ‘The Film Buff’s Bucket List: The 50 Movies of the 2000s to See Before You Die.’ “

Stuckmann produced the film with Aaron B. Koontz, Ashleigh Snead and Cameron Burns for Paper Street Pictures. Executive producers are Trevor Macy and Melinda Nishioka for Intrepid Pictures with Mike Flanagan, Adam F. Goldberg, Paul Holbrook, Sean E. DeMott and Tony Killough.

Jason Wald, Neon’s vice president of acquisitions and production, and Aaron B. Koontz, CEO of Paper Street Pictures, represented their respective filmmaking teams in negotiating the deal.

Recently, Neon secured the North American rights for Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” US rights for Osgood Perkins’ “The Monkey” featuring Theo James, and global rights for Perkins’ “Keeper” starring Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland. Additionally, Neon obtained North American rights for Julia Ducournau’s films “Alpha” and “The Unknown,” which are directed by Arthur Harari.

Neon has recently made the chilling horror film “Longlegs” by Perkins available in cinemas, raking in a remarkable $22 million during its opening week – an unprecedented achievement for Neon’s independent production house. In the coming months, audiences can look forward to Neon’s releases of Tilman Singer’s “Cuckoo” and Sean Baker’s “Anora,” which received the Palme d’Or award at Cannes Film Festival.
