Neil Druckmann, who shared the credit for creating The Last of Us game series and co-managed its highly praised HBO adaptation, recently decided to leave the TV series this year. Now, the show has been nominated for more than 15 Emmy Awards, and a third season has been approved. Finally, Druckmann has explained his reasons for going back to Naughty Dog full-time.
During a conversation with Variety, Druckmann expressed his pride in the achievements made on the show, yet recognized that it was becoming necessary to shift focus back towards game development as the writers were preparing for Season 3.
He considered the possibilities for the upcoming season, his ongoing projects related to “The Last of Us” (not only the TV show), and with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, our next major IP from Naughty Dog and PlayStation being his primary focus, he felt it would be more effective to maintain a higher-level position.
In the process, he mentioned that taking on the role of a co-showrunner for Seasons 1 and 2, along with managing a studio, directing, and writing, proved to be quite a demanding task.
“I was incredibly grateful for the team at Naughty Dog who took on additional responsibilities while I was away during Season 2. More specifically, I put a lot of work into Episode 206, from preparation to writing and direction. I wasn’t certain if I could repeat that effort again. During the time when we were finishing up press and ready to dive into Season 3 in earnest, it was a good moment for me to reevaluate everything.”
Regarding his participation in Season 3, Druckmann prefers a role more akin to guiding the narrative, rather than immersing himself heavily in the daily details.
Personally, there’s nothing quite like immersing myself in the intricate details of effects shots, offering script suggestions, and delving deep into the nitty-gritty. However, I’m trying to step back and guide it instead. For Season 3, my aim is to preserve its essence as authentically as Season 1 did, serving as a benchmark for this adaptation. Simultaneously, I want to appreciate and leverage the organic growth that our talented team brings to Season 3’s development. Therefore, my role will primarily remain at the strategic, high-level perspective.
Discussing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, it’s worth noting that a definite launch date hasn’t been set yet. However, there’s been some buzz in Hollywood about potentially turning the game into a movie adaptation.
