The smash hit Chinese animation “Ne Zha 2” is still breaking records with distributors planning to release an English version, featuring renowned voice actors. This move sets up a global expansion after its remarkable domestic success. With earnings of $2.11 billion worldwide, it’s now the highest-grossing animated film ever and ranks fifth among all films in history.
During a discussion titled “What is the Potential Limit for China’s Film Market?” at the Beijing International Film Festival, Catherine Ying, president of CMC Pictures, shared details about an English-dubbed version as part of the film’s global release strategy. Ying expressed enthusiasm and joy, stating that people are eagerly anticipating the release of “Ne Zha 2.”
CMC Pictures has successfully arranged distribution for the film on 1,000 screens in North America and 162 in Australia. For the upcoming English dubbed version, Ying mentioned that the promotional strategy will undergo a substantial change, focusing on “specific television advertising and social platforms like YouTube and TikTok,” as well as a larger marketing budget to cater to audiences beyond Chinese speakers.
Chinese movies are surprisingly gaining significant traction in European film markets as well. Notably, the success of “Ne Zha 2” was emphasized by Cedric Behrel, the managing director of Trinity CineAsia.
The European release of “Ne Zha 2” has been phenomenal. We’ve only been running it for a month, and it’s now the top-grossing Chinese film in Europe over the past two decades, stated Behrel. He referred to showing the film at the legendary Odeon Leicester Square cinema in London, typically reserved for major U.S. studios like those behind James Bond and ‘Wicked,’ as a “moment of inspiration” for Chinese cinema on the international stage.
The movie’s box office performance has significantly benefited from exclusive, high-quality screenings, as reported by Behrel. Interestingly, these premium format showings make up a substantial portion of total ticket sales – accounting for 33% in the U.K. and 24% in Germany.
Director Huang Jianxin of the movie “1921” emphasized the role of technological advancements such as integrating AI to improve audience experiences, particularly those who are short on time. On the other hand, director Andrew Lau from the “Infernal Affairs” trilogy leaned towards a more traditional approach, stressing that the core elements – story and script – should be the primary focus. He further stated that AI lacks emotion and warmth, suggesting that effective communication is essential, with AI serving merely as a tool.

Director Huang Jianxin of “1921” focused on using technology like AI to make the viewing experience more engaging for busy viewers. In contrast, director Andrew Lau from the “Infernal Affairs” trilogy emphasized the importance of having a strong storyline and script. He explained that AI may be useful but it lacks emotion or warmth, making human communication vital, with AI serving as nothing more than a tool.
Daniel Manwaring, the CEO of Imax China, expressed: “A market exists, it just requires high-quality films.” He emphasized the significance of creating “an optimal viewing experience” to draw crowds, mentioning that five Chinese movies are scheduled to be filmed using Imax this year.
Speaking at a key event in Beijing, Fu Ruoqing – head of China Film Group – stressed China’s aspiration to transform itself into a dominant force in cinema by 2035, as outlined in its 40th five-year plan. He underscored the importance of expanding the Chinese film industry beyond a reliance on just a handful of blockbusters. Following the strong Lunar New Year box office performance with “Ne Zha 2,” he noted that the market has cooled down again. He emphasized the necessity for a diverse selection of films to ensure the ecosystem remains vibrant and sustainable.
Embracing the growing international interest in Chinese cinema, I am confident that productions like “Ne Zha 2” hold immense promise for the global market. In my view, the potential rewards could be staggering.
