NCIS: Origins Showrunner Reveals Stunning Season 2 Surprise Fans Never Saw Coming

We’re almost at the end of the first season of NCIS: Origins on television schedules in 2025, but don’t fret, fans of this prequel! The good news is that we won’t have to say goodbye just yet to Leroy Jethro Gibbs and his adventures in the early 1990s. Back in February, Origins was one of nine shows that CBS decided to renew for another season, and David J. North, who co-runs the show with Gina Lucita Monreal, shared his excitement over this news. In our conversation, I also learned that Origins achieved something remarkable for the entire franchise during its first season.

Prior to the season finale of NCIS: Origins, I had the opportunity to chat with North and Monreal about the upcoming episode (keep an eye out for that feature) as well as their overall work on the fifth spin-off of NCIS. When I asked them how they reacted when they found out NCIS: Origins was getting a Season 2, North shared:

Amy Reisenbach, president of the network, who has been the show’s ardent supporter from the start and admirer of our creative vision for it, reached out to us. Essentially, she encouraged us to maintain the essence of NCIS that Gina and I are so proud of, but also introduce a fresh perspective by delving deeper into character development. She even granted us the freedom, and for Episode 10 titled ‘Blue Bayou,’ to produce an NCIS episode without a traditional case, instead focusing on telling a compelling character story.

In simpler terms, the episode “Blue Bayou” from the NCIS franchise departed from its usual format where each episode presents a separate case. Instead, this episode concentrated on the consequences of Austin Stowell’s character, Gibbs, shooting Pedro Hernandez. The episode also offered a glimpse into how Gibbs interacted with NIS, and while there was a hint at the ongoing Sandman storyline at the end, the main focus was to provide more understanding about the character previously portrayed by Mark Harmon on the original NCIS series.

Paramount Plus offers endless entertainment, especially if you’re a fan of NCIS shows like Origins. Moving on to Season 2 of NCIS: Origins, it’s wonderful to learn that Amy Reisenbach endorsed the show, and it certainly proved beneficial. It was only appropriate for the executives to inform David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal about this news directly over the phone, and they subsequently communicated this exciting update to their team in person. As North reminisced:

One fine morning, she gathered us and shared fantastic news that left us ecstatic. The joy was indescribable, and it was an unforgettable moment when we got the opportunity to visit the iconic Paramount lot where we work. During breaks between setups, we had the chance to share our excitement with the cast and crew, which turned out to be a truly exceptional experience that I’ll cherish forever.

I’m guessing it must be quite a joy to let fans know that their beloved show, Origins, will have another season. As for when you’ll get to see it, I can’t provide an exact date yet, but it seems likely it will debut in the fall, following the 23rd season of the main series. Another anticipated premiere this fall is NCIS: Tony & Ziva, while we’re still waiting for information on when NCIS: Sydney Season 3 will be released.

Don’t miss the season finale of “NCIS: Origins” next Monday at 10 pm ET on CBS! The upcoming episode, titled “Cecilia,” will feature the younger version of Lara Macy, a Military Police Investigator who is determined to reveal the truth about Pedro Hernandez’s murder.
