NBCUniversal is developing a new mobile-focused news platform, which their leading news executive refers to as a “mobile-first” service. They plan to debut this service by the end of this year’s fourth quarter.
At a gathering hosted by Semafor, NBCUniversal’s news operations chairman, Cesar Conde, announced that the platform could offer both brief and extended videos featuring NBC News journalists and reporters. This unveiling would represent another addition to the organization’s lineup since Conde assumed his position in 2020, and it appears to be targeting a fresh demographic of viewers who primarily consume news through video platforms like TikTok or YouTube.
According to an informed source, executives view the upcoming service as a high-end or superior product. It will provide approximately two dozen live streams in both English and Spanish, covering topics such as lifestyle, true crime, and international news. This service will also offer original video content from NBC News reporters worldwide, along with on-demand viewing of popular shows like “Today” and “Meet the Press”. Additionally, it will grant access to a collection of NBC News podcasts.
The new service is an addition to a string of subscription offerings from NBCU news entities that have been rolled out recently. For instance, CNBC has introduced a streaming platform offering global broadcast feeds on a subscription basis, while “Today” unveiled an application centered around fitness and nutrition content. In light of this, Conde has motivated his team to consider opportunities in audio, commerce, and high-speed internet services.
As the younger generation increasingly relies on digital sources for information, our service is being prepared. Interestingly, around half of TikTok users (which equates to about 17% of all U.S. adults) admit to regularly receiving news from the platform, as per Pew Research Center. Moreover, a 2024 survey by Pew revealed that approximately one in five Americans, and an impressive 37% of adults under 30, frequently obtain news via social media influencers. These influencers can often be found on X, but also on Instagram or YouTube.
In recent times, NBC News has introduced numerous services, several tailored to changing preferences among younger viewers. These include a dedicated streaming platform for their flagship morning show “Today,” as well as a real-time streaming service named “NBC News Now.
