With its focus on hard news and breaking stories, it seems to have struck a chord with viewers who crave factual information over opinionated commentary.
NBC News’ continuous streaming service, NBC News Now, is set to debut in Mexico and Brazil – the region’s largest markets – as part of its ongoing global expansion.
Ever since it debuted in 2019, this digital news service has expanded its reach to countries like the U.K., Germany, Austria, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, France, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland. It can now be found across Europe through Sky UK and Virgin Media. Unlike other services, it focuses more on delivering factual news and recent developments, rather than opinion or commentary pieces.
Samsung customers in Mexico and Brazil can access NBC News Now without any extra charges, as it’s an ad-funded service available across all its platforms, both within the US and internationally.
In the region, it is known as the first U.S. news channel on this platform, featuring a variety of shows such as “Meet the Press Now with Kristen Welker,” “Hallie Jackson Now,” “Top Story with Tom Llamas,” and “Stay Tuned Now with Gadi Schwartz,” along with “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” and “Dateline NBC.” It boasts more live, original programming hours per day than any of its competing streaming news networks.
The growth is based upon the outstanding success of NBC News Now during Q3 and the election period. In Q3, NBC News Now recorded its maximum viewership ever and its most significant quarterly primetime audience up until that point.
On the day of the elections, NBC News Now broke a new record, garnering over 100 million views, making it their busiest week to date. Throughout this historic period, lasting approximately 40 hours, they offered uninterrupted live coverage, commencing from the start of election day.
Simultaneously, the linear counterparts in the U.S. also achieved record ratings, but they subsequently dropped after the election. It’s predicted that they will regain those levels, much like they did in 2016 when Donald Trump, a Republican, was elected president.
Based on Nielsen’s data, MSNBC saw a significant surge in viewership during the election night, pulling in approximately 6 million viewers. Yet, the number of viewers dropped dramatically in the post-election period, dipping below 1 million.
According to Statista, over half of Brazil’s internet users prefer to consume their news digitally. Meanwhile, television viewers in Mexico lean towards traditional media, with Televisa and TV Azteca being the most popular choices, while their online news preferences tend to be fulfilled by the websites of leading print newspapers.
