A brand-new basketball league is starting in Europe, and the NBA is committing $3 billion to help it grow and succeed.
Currently, the NBA is the main place to watch high-quality basketball. While college basketball and leagues in countries like China, Spain, and Australia offer some options, there aren’t many other major competitive leagues.
The NBA is expected to remain the dominant basketball league for the foreseeable future, but there’s optimism that the newly formed European league could become significantly popular.
Investors worried about wait for profits from European basketball
The NBA was looking for investors for its new plans, and several showed interest as early as March. However, a common question kept coming up: could the investment actually turn a profit?
The NBA is reportedly attracting a lot of investor attention, with offers ranging from $500 million to over $1 billion.
The NBA has addressed worries about the WNBA’s financial future by announcing a new $3 billion investment in the league.
According to a Financial Times report, the NBA plans to provide each team with a guaranteed yearly payment and boost prize money. These changes are being called careful improvements to the existing system.
The report also notes strong interest in the new league, with over 120 groups already applying to participate. These applicants include investment companies, individual investors, current European basketball teams, and even some football clubs.
How will the European basketball league work?
To begin with, this new league would be independent of the existing EuroLeague, which has been running since the year 2000.
Europe’s top basketball league plans to blend the team ownership system used in the US with the traditional structure of European leagues.
The league’s original twelve teams wouldn’t be at risk of being relegated. Each year after that, four to six additional teams would earn a spot in the league based on how well they played.
The NBA will initially own a majority stake – 52% – of the league, but this percentage will gradually decrease as more teams join in the future.
