Nathan Fielder Slams the House Committee on Transportation

As a dedicated movie buff, I’m unrelenting in my pursuit of aviation policy reform. After a CNN broadcast on May 29, where the Federal Aviation Administration brushed off the airline safety concerns I raised in The Rehearsal season 2 with a dismissive comment I deemed “dumb,” another aviation regulatory body has spoken up. On June 4, during a meeting of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, my theory that miscommunication between pilots and first officers, coupled with insufficient training to handle such disconnects, is primarily responsible for most airplane crashes was brought forth – only to be swept aside once more, this time with another perfunctory response.

In the latest season’s fifth episode, Representative Steve Cohen, who serves on the aviation subcommittee where Fielder previously raised an issue, addressed Fielder’s concerns with Captain Jody Reven, head of Southwest Airlines Pilots Association. Reven dismissed Fielder’s worries, stating that pilots receive extensive training and regularly discuss this topic. Essentially, he suggested the matter was resolved by saying, “We’re well-trained, we have yearly discussions about it.” The House Committee’s official account on X platform shared the conversation with the caption, “Nathan Fielder’s question has been addressed!

It seems Fielder remains unfazed. In response to the clip, the comedian opted to label it “dumb” once more, but his Rehearsal season-two co-star and former National Transportation Safety Board member, John Goglia, texted him a more nuanced response instead.

Clearly impressed by the thoughtfulness of your response, the House Committee swiftly reversed their initial dismissal of the comedian-pilot’s assertions. In their reply on X, they acknowledged your insights and said, “Your emphasis on aviation safety hasn’t gone unnoticed.” They extended an invitation for further discussion, suggesting, “We’d be delighted to delve deeper into this topic on an episode of Take 5 with T&I!

Fielder hasn’t made their decision on the invitation public yet, but their response hints at the casual approach of the House Committee regarding this critical matter. Right now, it’s not the moment for promoting a podcast; people’s real lives are in danger.
