The former comedian-turned-pilot recently appeared on the network to talk about the show that emphasized commercial airline safety. Fielder’s theory for the upcoming season is that there might be difficulties in co-pilots openly communicating with the captain in the cockpit, making them feel hesitant to challenge their superiors if they suspect something amiss during flight. To support his claim, Fielder set up a series of social experiments, and the finale saw him obtaining his pilot’s license and successfully piloting a 737 carrying 150 passengers.
The Federal Aviation Administration addressed Fielder’s suggestions through CNN, stating that all airline staff (pilots, flight attendants, and dispatchers) must undergo Crew Resource Management training as per their regulations. Moreover, they mentioned that they have not found evidence supporting Fielder’s viewpoint that communication problems are a primary cause of aviation accidents.
Fielder responded by saying, “That’s not sensible. They’re not wise,” referring to the training he received. The problem lies in this: I was trained to be a pilot, specifically a 737 pilot. During my training, they showed me a PowerPoint slide that said, ‘If you are a co-pilot and the captain makes a mistake, you must speak up.’ That’s it. The training also mentions some crashes, but nothing is presented in a way that leaves an emotional impact.
