Masashi Kishimoto’s “Naruto” series introduces a vast array of distinctive characters across different age groups, the majority being ninjas hailing from one of the Five Major Nations. Typically, determining the age of a Naruto character can be straightforward by visual inspection, but there are certain exceptions where it becomes challenging. In reality, some Naruto characters mask their true ages, making them appear younger than they actually are.
The vast majority of these characters appear to be more than half a century old, but their appearances suggest they’re at least two decades younger. In Naruto, many fans didn’t realize just how old these characters truly were. Some of them witnessed the formation of the Ninja World itself, and one character lived for such a long time that he existed before the first ninja even appeared on Earth.
Age: 35 (Shippuden)
In the storyline of Naruto: Shippuden, Konan was the lone female in Akatsuki and momentarily governed the Hidden Rain Village. Her mentor was Jiraiya, who trained her to the level of Kage-ranked ninja. She also created a unique paper-based ninjutsu, powerful enough to potentially defeat Obito, but for Izanagi’s genjutsu (reality-altering illusion) intervention. At first glance, Konan seemed like a young, attractive woman in her twenties; however, it was revealed that she was actually 35 years old during the Naruto: Shippuden events. Despite this age revelation, her beauty remained undiminished.
In the Second Great Ninja War, Konan lost her family and saw her homeland devastated by the Great Ninja Villages. Subsequently, she fought for her village, was captured, and watched the man she cared deeply for die before her very eyes. Remarkably, despite enduring such intense stress and hardship, Konan appeared to be untouched by the ravages of time. Not a single strand of her hair turned white or gray.
Age: 54 (Shippuden)
As part of the illustrious Sanin trio, Jiraiya was renowned for his extraordinary ninja prowess, having been a formidable force hailed from the Concealed Leaf Village. Despite being repeatedly presented with the opportunity to become Hokage, he declined, feeling that he lacked the maturity required for such a position. This decision aligns with his self-perception as an unparalleled “super-pervert.” Jiraiya is widely respected and admired due to his direct role in mentoring several individuals who eventually ascended to the positions of Hokage and elite Kage-level ninja.
In their first encounter, Jiraiya appeared to be around 35 to 45 years old, but he was actually 51. Regrettably, he passed away at the age of 54. While some Naruto fans might assume his white hair hinted at his advanced age, it’s worth noting that he had this color since childhood. Despite behaving immaturely when intoxicated and having a tendency to peek in bathhouses, he was far from acting his age. However, even young S-Ranked ninjas like Itachi, who were significantly younger than him, held great respect for Jiraiya in battle.
Age: 35 (Shippuden)
Although Sasori was the first to perish among them, he was undeniably one of the most formidable individuals. He held the title of the Hidden Sand Village’s foremost puppet master, boasting exceptional strength and skill. Notably, it was under his control that the 3rd Kazekage met his end; a figure still revered as the strongest Kazekage in the village’s history. Capable of managing up to a hundred marionettes simultaneously, Sasori had employed this power in past battles to overpower entire nations.
In simpler terms, Sasori excelled at creating lifelike dolls out of people. He considered this craft to be the pinnacle of enduring artistry. These dolls retained their original appearance and chakra abilities. They could utilize any techniques or unique powers they possessed while alive. Interestingly, Sasori transformed himself into a human doll after departing from the Sand Village, explaining why he appeared 17 years old when he encountered Sakura and Elder Chiyo within Akatsuki’s hideout, despite being 35 at that time, which left Elder Chiyo surprised.
Age: 56 (Shippuden)
In the world of Naruto, Orochimaru is a renowned member of the Legendary Sanin from the Leaf Village, known by many as one of the strongest ninja ever. While he may have played a crucial role in saving the world during the Fourth Great Ninja War, for much of Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden, Orochimaru was consumed with an intense desire to achieve immortality – a quest driven by his ambition to uncover all the world’s secrets.
In Naruto: Shippuden, Orochimaru was approximately 56 years old when the series ended, yet he retained the same appearance as he did at age 25. The Forbidden Jutsu he employs for immortality primarily accounts for his youthful visage, but it’s also worth noting that he has always maintained a pale and serpentine complexion. Surprisingly, Orochimaru appears even younger in the Boruto sequel series despite being around 71 during the New Era. This is possibly due to his current host, a White Zetsu, having cells of Hashirama, allowing him to manipulate his host’s body to slow down the aging process.
Age: 54 (Shippuden)
Tsunade, who is a descendant of a notable figure, eventually took after him by assuming the role of the Fifth Hokage. She’s the last of the Legendary Sannin and remains renowned as the most powerful medical ninja ever known. Tsunade showcases extraordinary physical strength beyond human capabilities and possesses a robust life energy. When she employs Mitotic Regeneration, she effectively gains an immortal-like status.
In simpler terms, Tsunade seems much younger than her actual age, appearing around 30 during the Fourth Great Ninja War at the age of 54. Even in her seventies now, she maintains this youthful appearance. This deceptive youth is not due to exceptional genetics but rather a powerful technique called Transformation Jutsu. Ironically, beneath this youthful facade, Tsunade’s true form is that of an elderly and frail woman, which could be a consequence of her extensive use of Mitotic Regeneration, a technique that speeds up cell division.
Age: 91 (Shippuden)
Among the Akatsuki, Kakazu stood out as the most avaricious and infamous for betraying his comrades. Apart from Zetsu, he was the oldest member of the organization. In his confrontation with Kakashi and Team Asuma, Kakuzu disclosed that he had previously fought Hashirama, who had been deceased for over half a century by then. Despite appearing to be in his 40s, Kakuzu was actually 91 years old when he engaged Kakashi, making him older than the Hidden Leaf Village itself.
Kakuzu lived such a long life due to the Earth Rancor Fear Technique, an outlawed ninja skill he obtained when he turned rogue from the Waterfall Village Hidden. This technique, known as Earth Rancor Fear, caused numerous gray tendrils to grow within Kakuzu’s body. He could utilize these tendrils to extract a target’s organs and replace them with his own. As Kakuzu had four extra hearts implanted in his body, he wouldn’t die until all five of his hearts were completely destroyed.
Age: ~ 1000 Years
In the grand saga of Naruto, many fans, including myself, assumed Zetsu was a solitary entity with two distinct personas. However, it turned out that Zetsu was actually two separate beings! The Black Zetsu was serious, knowledgeable, and seemed to be the superior fighter, as it took the Fifth Mizukage and two future Kage to momentarily disable him. It appeared that Black Zetsu was the embodiment of Madara Uchiha’s will. Now here’s where things get interesting: Madara “birthed” Black Zetsu right before his demise, which would have made Black Zetsu approximately 30 during Naruto: Shippuden, but in truth, he was far older than that!
During the final phases of the Fourth Great Ninja War, it came to light that Black Zetsu was actually the embodiment of Kaguya Otsutsuki’s will. Before her sealing, Kaguya gave birth to Black Zetsu around 1,000 years ago. Since then, he has been working tirelessly towards Kaguya’s resurrection, thereby controlling the actions of Indra and Madara in the process. In essence, Black Zetsu played a pivotal role in shaping not only the Ninja World but also many of its long-standing conflicts.
Age: ~ 1000 Years
White Zetsu exhibited a lighter, freer spirit compared to Black Zetsu, eventually meeting his end at the hands of Sasuke during the Fourth Great Ninja War on the second day. Possessing the ability to manipulate all five fundamental chakra natures and Wood Release, as well as generating tiny spores that drained chakra like parasites, White Zetsu was unlike his dark counterpart in origin. Both were born from Kaguya, but through distinct methods.
1,000 years ago, White Zetsu, who appeared to be in his 30s, became a victim of Kaguya’s Infinite Illusion, a powerful ability cast long before she was eventually sealed. Originally a human, he underwent a transformation after being bound to the God Tree and confined within the Gedo Statue. As Kaguya employed the Infinite Illusion over a decade prior to her sealing, White Zetsu is actually older than Black Zetsu.
Age:
On Mount Myoboku, Gamamaru, the most venerable and revered toad, holds a distinguished position. He was the one who foretold Jiraiya about the training of the Prophesied Child. From the instant Gamamaru made his debut, it was evident that he had lived for many years. His skin is heavily creased, and due to his fading eyesight, he must squint. It wasn’t until a flashback episode during the Fourth Ninja War that viewers of Naruto discovered Gamamaru’s actual age.
In bygone times, Gamamaru interacted with Hagoromo Otsutsuki, also known as the Six Paths Sage, and his younger sibling Hamura. During this encounter, Gamamaru disclosed the malevolent God Tree ritual performed by Kaguya. In return, he promised to instruct them both in the art of Sage Jutsu. This significant conversation took place over a millennium ago. At that time, Gamamaru was significantly younger and smaller, suggesting his existence preceded Kaguya’s arrival on Earth, as he had witnessed her Infinite Tsukuyomi.
Age: – 1000 Years
As a representative of the primary lineage of the Otsutsuki Clan, Kaguya is one such member who possesses unique abilities. She has the uncanny ability to traverse dimensions instantly and her bones hold the potent power to reduce others into ashes. Arriving on Earth more than a millennium ago, Kaguya wasn’t making her first visit to a planet to drain its chakra reserves; this had been done before by her kind.
In the continuation of the storyline known as Boruto, it was disclosed that for centuries, God Trees were being nurtured by both Kaguya and Isshiki Otsutsuki across different planets. The aim was for Isshiki to continuously transform until he attained deity status, but instead, Kaguya seized the Chakra Fruit, unintentionally bestowing chakra upon humans. Despite her distinctive Otsutsuki horns, Kaguya maintains an appearance as a strikingly beautiful woman in her late thirties. Though she’s been sealed, revived, and re-sealed again, it’s important to note that Kaguya is actually more than a millennium old.
