Nacon’s New Xbox Controller Is Loaded With Cool Features & One Curious Design Choice

Previously, Xbox Series X|S users were limited to using only official Microsoft wireless controllers. However, unofficial options like those from Scuf were available through modding. The Xbox Wireless Controller and Elite Series 2 Controllers were the primary choices. While Microsoft’s own controllers are of high quality, variety is always appreciated. It was therefore exciting when Microsoft decided to expand its wireless protocol to licensed manufacturers. As a result, the market for third-party wireless Xbox controllers has seen quite a growth over the last two years. The latest significant competitor to challenge the Elite Series 2 in the premium controller category is the Nacon Revolution X Unlimited.

In 2023, Nacon launched the Revolution 5 Pro, a PS5 controller with a pro-style design. The Revolution X Unlimited, which is part of the same series and was released later, shares some similarities, like the interchangeable weights. However, the Revolution X Unlimited sports unique features not present in the Revolution 5 Pro. One of the most significant differences is that the Xbox version comes equipped with a built-in LCD display and offers two swappable D-pads, whereas the Revolution 5 Pro has a D-pad tailored for fighting games.

The in-built customization interface is a convenient aspect that we’ve noticed in some other controllers, like Turtle Beach’s Stealth Ultra. It functions smoothly, enabling you to reassign buttons and create personalized profiles. By connecting a wired headset into the 3.5mm audio jack, you can easily adjust the EQ settings and game/chat balance right on the controller. I personally found the onboard controls useful because the Revolution X Unlimited software app for Xbox and PC is experiencing some bugs at the moment, particularly on Xbox where the app fails to function properly when adjusting settings. On the positive side, I didn’t encounter any issues while utilizing the built-in screen.

In a sense, the Nacon Revolution X Unlimited controller mimics the experience of using a premium-quality gamepad. The Hall Effect sticks offer a smooth and precise range of movement, while the microswitch face buttons provide a swift response with a satisfying click. One standout feature is its weighting system, which is reminiscent of what makes Microsoft’s Elite Series 2 controller feel so great due to its balanced weight distribution. The Revolution X Unlimited has detachable textured grips on the back of the handles that can be swapped out to adjust between three different weight options, helping users discover their preferred level of heft.

What I’ve found challenging about the Revolution X Unlimited controller is getting used to its distinctively shaped and positioned remappable back buttons. Specifically, the lower set of buttons have a right triangle shape and are located towards the bottom of the handles, while the upper pair of buttons are quadrilateral with uneven sides.

In contrast to most professional controllers sporting back buttons, these unique shapes of the Revolution X Unlimited feel distinct due to their lower placement. Normally, my middle and ring fingers would rest comfortably on the back buttons of similar devices such as the Elite Series 2 and Razer Wolverine V3 Pro for both Xbox and PC. However, with the Revolution X Unlimited, my usual hand positioning placed my ring and pinky fingers on the back buttons, which felt strange and required me to adjust my grip slightly downwards. So, if you’re accustomed to using pro-style controllers with four back buttons, initially adapting to the Revolution X Unlimited could be challenging, as I still find its layout perplexing even after extended use.

Beyond the debate over back button placement, which might be more convenient for players with larger hands, the Nacon Revolution X Unlimited boasts a robust set of features and components. It includes adjustable weights, six rubberized grip caps, two pairs of stick resistance rings, two metal D-pads, a charging stand, and a durable hardshell carrying case. Additionally, it offers adjustable trigger locks, two additional shoulder buttons, and intense vibration feedback due to motors situated in both the handles and triggers.

If the back buttons on the Nacon Revolution X Unlimited were more traditionally placed, it might surpass the Wolverine V3 Pro as my preferred Elite Series 2 alternative for those who find the placement of back buttons on the Elite Series 2 or other controllers less than ideal (e.g., too close together or too high). However, if you’re like me and primarily use the top two back buttons while largely ignoring the bottom two, you might still appreciate its design. Nevertheless, since back buttons are often a key feature for pro-style controllers, the limited utility of the additional back buttons on the Revolution X Unlimited could be a significant drawback.

Currently, the Nacon Revolution X Unlimited is on sale for $200, priced identically to both the Wolverine V3 Pro and the Elite Series 2, due to Microsoft’s recent price hike. However, you can grab an Elite Series 2 at Amazon for just $159 at this moment.
