Kyle Hausmann-Stokes delivers a compelling first directorial effort with “My Dead Friend Zoe“, a film deeply rooted in personal experiences stemming from the unfortunate deaths of two of his fellow soldiers. Multiple thought-provoking themes are skillfully woven into the narrative, but what truly sets this movie apart is its exploration of life after military service in America. Hausmann-Stokes sensitively and truthfully portrays the deep wounds that combat veterans often bear upon their return home from war.
In a moving portrayal by Sonequa Martin-Green, the character Merit is depicted as a veteran who spent eight years in Afghanistan as a mechanic for the U.S. Army. During her service, she formed a close bond with Zoe, played by Natalie Morales, whose life ends tragically. Throughout the film, we learn more about this loss. In her encounters with Zoe’s spirit, Merit experiences visions of her deceased friend. Their interactions are frequent, and during these conversations, Zoe’s wit can be both darkly amusing and painfully cutting.

In a film with such heavy themes, it might seem inconsiderate or even cliche to have a deceased friend reappear to make jokes and tease the main character. However, Hausmann-Stokes manages this concept without resorting to sentimental or cheap tactics. The way he handles the material never feels forced or manipulative, but rather adds an essential emotional depth that keeps the story feeling authentic and grounded in reality.
Except for the scenes set in Afghanistan, the majority of the narrative unfolds in Oregon. After an incident at her workplace warehouse, Merit is indicted for negligence and mandated by the court to participate in support group meetings designed for ex-soldiers dealing with PTSD. These gatherings are facilitated by Dr. Cole (played by Morgan Freeman), a VA counselor who neither indulges nor overly comforts Merit but instead displays genuine empathy towards her.
While Merit receives a call from her mother, Kris (Gloria Reuben), informing her that her grandfather, Dale (Ed Harris), has been hospitalized. Upon examination, the doctor determines Dale has early Alzheimer’s disease, causing Merit and her mother to ponder challenging decisions. As they weigh their options, Merit decides to live with her difficult grandfather at his beloved lakeside cabin to mend their strained bond, a connection deeply important to both of them. This move could potentially provide the opportunity for Merit to address her own long-suppressed emotional wounds.

Hausmann-Stokes skillfully weaves together a poignant post-military veteran tale and a deeply moving family drama, linking them in a manner that sheds light on several compelling real-world concerns. Sonequa Martin-Green delivers an outstanding, eye-catching performance as the lead actress, while Ed Harris once again demonstrates his adored status as an actor with a powerful portrayal. Morgan Freeman exudes reliability in his relatively small role, and Utkarsh Ambudkar brings some humor to the production as a bashful retirement home director and part-time cemetery caretaker.
At first glance, the idea behind “My Dead Friend Zoe” might seem implausible. However, every aspect of it feels genuine and unforced, including the skillfully placed humor that aligns beautifully with the narrative. Although there are some predictable storylines to navigate, and the climax seems a bit hurried, these elements don’t detract from the raw inspiration evident in the filmmaker’s work. This powerful and enlightening piece of reality-based cinema will be available in theaters starting February 28th.
