My 10 Favorite A24 Films

#10 – “White Noise” (2022)

Without a doubt, let me share my perspective on this intriguing topic. Some might find it surprising, but I’m firmly behind “White Noise” and its inclusion here. Upon rewatching, I began to grasp Noah Baumbach’s unique approach. Once I was in sync, I found myself captivated. [MY REVIEW] Although “The Iron Claw” garnered praise from peers in the critical community, it seems to have been overlooked, particularly during award seasons. This heart-wrenching biopic, centered on the Von Erich family’s tragic tale within professional wrestling, boasts an exceptional ensemble cast, with Zac Efron delivering a standout performance that is truly his best yet. Remarkably, it manages to tell their heartbreaking narrative with sensitivity and understanding.

#6 – “Past Lives” (2023)

2023 proved to be an outstanding year for A24, and a significant factor behind this success was the movie “Past Lives.” This film is brimming with elements that make it truly special as an emotionally resonant drama. Notably, it served as the remarkable feature film debut for writer-director Celine Song. Furthermore, Greta Lee delivered one of the year’s most impressive performances in this production. As a cinephile who’s spent countless hours sifting through award-winning films and hidden gems alike, I can confidently say that J.C. Chandor’s “A Most Violent Year” is one of the most underrated movies of recent years. Despite being snubbed by major awards ceremonies in 2014, this rich and gritty crime drama has only grown in my esteem with each viewing.

#4 – “The Rover” (2014)

I’m guessing this is a pick that will surprise a lot of people. Nevertheless I’m a huge fan of “The Rover”, David Michôd’s dark and gritty dystopian drama set in a lawless Australian outback. Guy Pearce delivers a phenomenal lead performance, but it’s Robert Pattinson who steals the show. This is the performance that opened many of our eyes to the “Twilight” star and he hasn’t looked back since. If you haven’t seen “The Rover”, do yourself a favor and check it out. [MY REVIEW]

#3 – “The Witch” (2015)

In my review: Emerging filmmaker Robert Eggers made a significant impact with his impressive directorial debut, “The Witch”, which is considered one of the best debuts of the last decade. This movie, created on a small budget, showcases Eggers’ exceptional skill – it’s both chilling and filled with tension. To add to its appeal, “The Witch” catapulted young actress Anya Taylor-Joy into stardom, and her career has flourished since then. #2 – “First Reformed” (2018)

In my review, Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed” is a thought-provoking movie that lingers in your mind long after watching it. One of the reasons for its impact lies in its profound examination of guilt, fixation, self-destruction, and despair. Ethan Hawke gives an outstanding performance, truly living the role of Schrader’s tormented protagonist. The artistic influence of filmmakers like Bresson and Bergman is evident throughout. #1 – “The Zone of Interest” (2023)

Some may be quick to cry “recency bias” and I can understand why. But don’t be so quick to dismiss the stunningly brilliant film that is “The Zone of Interest”. Jonathan Glazer’s daringly precise and artfully calculated Holocaust drama is so quietly chilling that the true insidious nature of what we see creeps up on us. It’s fittingly unsettling yet strategic in how it conveys its horrors. As a result we get a landmark achievement both in filmmaking and as a historical reflection. [MY REVIEW]
