As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that this year’s Sloan Student Prize finalists have truly piqued my interest. The caliber of these stories and their potential to bring groundbreaking science themes to the big screen is simply exhilarating!
The Museum of the Moving Image in collaboration with the Sloan Foundation has chosen nine finalists from their Sloan competition. These selected individuals are given the chance to work closely with mentors throughout the year and create a screenplay centered around science. Two winners will be awarded a $20,000 prize at the end of this process.
The program’s mentors are Graham Slack, author of “The Harvard Computers”, Gillian Weeks who wrote the screenplay for “Let There Be Light”, Temi Ojo, a writer and director known for “A Man with a Missing Face”, Chadd Hatbold, a filmmaker famous for “The Wrath of Becky”, and Jordan McCray, creator of “Committed”.
The foundation collaborates with six filmmaking institutions: the American Film Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, New York University, University of Southern California, and UCLA. Contenders from these universities will strive for the Sloan Grand Jury Award. Meanwhile, contenders from another set of six schools will vie for a different award, the Sloan Discovery Prize, while continuing to receive guidance from mentors throughout the process.
The Grand Jury Prize was created back in 2011, and it was expanded in 2019 to incorporate the Discovery Prize. This change allowed the program to encourage students from public universities to participate by nominating them. Among the finalists for both the Grand Jury and the Discovery Prize, two winners will be recognized at the Sloan awards ceremony held at MoMI during their First Look festival in March. These honorees will have their exceptional works read aloud by professional actors as part of the event. To find out more about these prestigious awards, take a look at this video.
