As a lifelong cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of film culture, I am absolutely thrilled about Mubi‘s new venture into publishing with Mubi Editions! The world of cinema and the arts is not just about the moving images on screen, but also the intricate textual elements that often go unnoticed.
Media company Mubi, known for distributing, streaming, and producing art films, is expanding its horizons into book publishing.
In April, Mubi Editions, a new global publishing division focusing on cinema and art, will make its debut. This venture aims to release content across various formats and genres. To kick things off is “Read Frame Type Film,” created in partnership with the Centre Pompidou in Paris. According to Mubi, this could be one of up to three books they plan to release next year.
The new project, as stated by Mubi, aims to significantly contribute to the development of a globally connected community of art enthusiasts – both viewers and readers, presently and in the time to come. This venture will be active across four primary categories. The “Projections” series will delve into the realm of film culture and history. “Auteurs” will encompass books and unique items created in partnership with distinguished artists and filmmakers. “Internegatives” will re-release rare, out-of-print or recently translated texts. Lastly, “Lights!” will consist of literature that deepens our understanding of Mubi’s own productions and releases.
Mubi currently offers merchandise related to their film collection (such as a “The Substance” candle modeled after Demi Moore’s grotesque monster from the body-horror finale), and publishes the biannual magazine Notebook. However, establishing an official publishing imprint, similar to A24’s publishing endeavors, represents a significant milestone in the company’s expansion phase. In 2022, Mubi has surpassed its own box office record not once but twice – first with “Priscilla” and later with “The Substance,” marking their initial wide release in the U.S.
I’m thrilled to announce that I can now pre-order “Read Frame Type Film,” a fascinating compilation put together by curator Enrico Camporesi, design historian Catherine de Smet, and designer Philippe Millot. This book aims to shed light on the often overlooked textual components—credits, subtitles, title cards—in experimental and art-house filmmaking. The trio delves into 24 thought-provoking works from the Centre Pompidou’s film collection, as Mubi suggests, offering fresh insights into the relationship between cinema and typography.
Ever since it was established, Mubi has viewed publishing as a crucial aspect in linking films with worldwide viewers, stated Daniel Kasman, Vice President of Editorial Content. Expanding on the outstanding work done by our online and print publication, Notebook, we are now launching Mubi Editions – a fresh book imprint designed to delve deeper into the aesthetic charm and wealth of cinema as an art form. This move will further strengthen Mubi’s commitment to unite audiences globally through their shared passion for exceptional films and the cinematic culture and history.
Mubi Editions can be purchased on the Mubi website, yet they also have international distribution partners. These include Thames & Hudson for countries outside the U.S. and Canada, and Distributed Art Publishers for the U.S. and Canada specifically.
