Mubi Expands Theatrical Operations to Italy With Former Lucky Red Exec Gabriele D’Andrea in Charge

Mubi, the worldwide streaming service, plans to grow its theater activities in Italy. This was hinted at by Efe Cakarel, Mubi’s CEO, during a recent interview for a feature article in EbMaster.

On Thursday, Mubi revealed that Gabriele D’Andrea has been appointed as VP and Managing Director for Mubi Italia. In this position, he will spearhead the company’s growth into Italian theatrical distribution. This role enhances Mubi’s current theatrical operations in North America, Latin America, the U.K., Germany, and Benelux regions, where they distribute films theatrically through Cinéart, a majority stake of which Mubi acquired in 2024.

D’Andrea is moving on to Mubi after spending 13 years with the well-known indie company Lucky Red, where he oversaw their theatrical division. He is also the CEO of Circuito Cinema, Italy’s leading chain of independent and art house cinemas. He will maintain his position at Circuito Cinema while taking on his new role at Mubi, as stated in an announcement.

Mubi Italia is set to debut its theatrical lineup in Italy towards the end of this year, starting with the premiere of Lynne Ramsay’s film “Die My Love,” featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. This movie was among several territories acquired by Mubi for a massive $24 million deal during Cannes Film Festival, where they were quite active in making acquisitions.

In addition to their shopping spree at Cannes, they also acquired several other upcoming films for Mubi’s theater releases. These include Oliver Laxe’s “Sirât,” which won the festival’s jury prize, and Kelly Reichardt’s “The Mastermind” featuring Josh O’Connor. According to the statement, these two form the base of Mubi Italia’s launch catalog: daring, director-focused films that embody Mubi’s worldwide dedication to cinematic greatness.
