Continuing with its buying trend at the Cannes Film Festival, streaming service Mubi has picked up Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident” for various international markets, excluding the United States, according to our sources.
Neon is believed to have taken U.S. on the film, which is a Cannes standout.
The film’s debut as a competitor at Cannes signified the return of the acclaimed Iranian director to the festival, following his release from prison and a gap of seven years since “Three Faces.” The screening received a prolonged applause.
Once the thunderous applause subsided, Panahi delivered a heartfelt speech in which he acknowledged and honored filmmakers who are currently incarcerated in Iran. He confessed that upon his own release from prison, he felt a sense of guilt. “I looked behind me and saw an incredibly high wall,” he said. “And beyond this wall, all these other loved ones, all these people, were still trapped.” This led him to ponder how he could be joyful or feel free when they were still confined.
In ‘It Was Just an Accident,’ I found myself drawn into the raw emotions of a band of ex-inmates seeking retribution against their tormentor, a cruel guard from their past. This gripping tale offers a poignant exploration of justice, revenge, and redemption.
In one of his initial interviews after a 14-year prohibition on filmmaking, press interaction, and travel, Panahi said, “When you spend eight hours daily with a blindfold on, facing a wall, being questioned by someone who’s always standing behind you, it makes you constantly ponder about the kind of dialogue we might engage in.
As a fervent advocate for the work of filmmaker Jafar Panahi, I can’t help but echo Peter Debruge’s sentiments. Despite being detained numerous times under allegations of propaganda and imprisoned on two separate occasions, Panahi only grows more passionate about his art. Remarkably, he emerges from these ordeals with renewed vigor, ready to challenge the status quo once again.
Panahi is is considered one of his country’s greatest living film masters.
In 2010, a renowned filmmaker, famous for award-winning films like “The Circle,” “Offside,” “This is Not a Film,” “Taxi” and more recently “No Bears,” was prohibited from making movies, talking to the media, or traveling. Despite this, he secretly continued to create films. This ban was lifted in April 2023, and Iranian officials have now granted him permission to travel to Cannes to premiere his latest film titled “It Was Just an Accident.
