For the long-awaited Magic: The Gathering crossover with Final Fantasy, previews have started, and a single overpowered card is causing quite the stir among players.
2025 promises a significant milestone for Magic: The Gathering, as it kicks off an exhilarating release plan with Aetherdrift setting the pace. As fans explore the fresh mechanics tied to the racing-themed deck and choose their preferred new playstyles, Wizards of the Coast is busy readying players for upcoming expansions in this Trading Card Game.
Among all the exciting upcoming events, the Magic: The Gathering (MTG) collaboration with Final Fantasy, titled Universes Beyond, is generating the highest level of pre-release enthusiasm. However, a sneak peek at this crossover has sparked divided opinions among the game’s fans.
During the Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy First Look event, the introduction of the Jumbo Cactuar had some players eagerly devising combinations, whereas others expressed concerns about potential impacts on the game due to its arrival.
The grandeur of FINAL FANTASY wouldn’t be complete without its legendary bosses! The ominous presence that casts a shadow over the entire world of Spira in FFX, Sin, is also present in MTGxFINALFANTASY.
And remember, don’t underestimate the Jumbo Cactuar – be cautious if you can’t block its attacks!

MTG X Final Fantasy’s Jumbo Cactuar is an absolute menace
Every time Jumbo Cactuar launches an attack, its power surges to an astounding 10,000 points. Yes, you’ve read it correctly; it boasts a whopping 10,000 in strength. It’s a delightful touch of character that truly embodies the Magic: The Gathering X Final Fantasy collaboration – until you remember that it is indeed legal for Standard play!
As a devoted Magic: The Gathering enthusiast, I’ve discovered that this card boasts an astonishing power of 10,000, which can unleash some truly jaw-dropping combinations, thanks to the multitude of abilities that instruct players to perform actions based on a creature’s power. Already, fellow commanders have devised strategies for summoning swarms of 10,000 tokens, playing every Land card in our decks, and, in a single stroke, eliminating all opponents at the table!

I can’t help but feel thrilled about the excitement surrounding these games! For me, defeating an opponent in a one-on-one match is as effortless as playing Jumbo Cactuar Trample or making it impossible to block for a turn. Some players find this card intriguing with its potential uses, while others can’t hide their anger at its very conception.
One player expressed their concern to Wizards of the Coast, saying, “I’m not sure you all had a clear plan with the Cactuar. It doesn’t seem suitable for Commander or any other format. The bans last year were questionable enough, and now it appears that every format will be plagued by a card that shouldn’t have been created or allowed to be produced in the first place,” another player responded.
In simpler terms, the oversized Cactuar from the crossover between MTG X and Final Fantasy seems like it could be banned in the future, but since the set hasn’t been released yet, we don’t know just how much of an impact it will have on games before that happens.
