MSNBC’s upcoming weekend primetime discussion panel, “The Weekend,” isn’t launching until later this month, yet its four moderators recently had their initial opportunity to discuss their strategies.
Initially, it may not be immediately apparent that Ayman Mohyeldin, Elise Jordan, Catherine Rampell, and Antonia Hylton share many similarities. Each individual possesses a unique professional history that sets them apart from the others. Hylton gained prominence by working for emerging news platforms such as Mic and Vice.com before moving to NBCUniversal. Rampell has established herself as an economic analyst at The Washington Post, in addition to being a regular contributor on various talk shows like CNN’s “News Night” and HBO’s “Real Time.” Mohyeldin initially gained recognition through his news reports for NBC News in the Middle East. Jordan, meanwhile, has worked with Senator Rand Paul and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
According to Rampell, each of us contributes a unique flavor during our meetings, as he mentioned in a recent interview following the official gathering of the quartet since their new hosting line-up was revealed. We all possess distinct strengths, and these will be evident when the program debuts. Additionally, they made their first joint appearance on “Morning Joe” after their show’s launch, which took place on Thursday.
As a passionate filmgoer, I’m excited about the multi-host panel approach that MSNBC seems to be doubling down on. Rebecca Kutler, who took over as head of this progressive-leaning news outlet earlier this year, has carefully curated three distinct groups of analysts, journalists, and experts. These talented individuals will be taking center stage during many of MSNBC’s weekend hours, as well as at 7 p.m. on weekdays. The weekend primetime slot (Saturdays and Sundays) will be graced by this ensemble. On the other hand, Jonathan Capehart, Eugene Daniels, and Jackie Alemany will come together on weekend mornings. Lastly, Michael Steele, Alicia Menendez, and Symone Sanders-Townsend will helm MSNBC’s early evening programming, which is designed to draw viewers in for primetime.
MSNBC is following suit with its rivals, Fox News Channel and CNN, by increasing its reliance on discussion shows. On Fox News Channel, “The Five” tends to be the most-watched time slot, and they also air “The Big Weekend Show” and “Outnumbered.” CNN has seen success with their 10 p.m. panel show, “NewsNight,” which is hosted by Abby Phillip.

MSNBC is mirroring the approach of its competitors, Fox News Channel and CNN, by focusing more on talk shows. Fox News Channel’s “The Five” often leads in ratings, and they also offer “The Big Weekend Show” and “Outnumbered.” CNN has made strides with their 10 p.m. panel show, “NewsNight,” which is fronted by Abby Phillip.
Mohyehldin points out a potential in weekend prime-time slot, where he’s been hosting solo for MSNBC since 2021. “I’ve discovered that the viewers who tune in during Saturday and Sunday evenings are incredibly devoted,” he shares. “There are people who truly love this nation and closely follow global events.” He adds, “We understand that there are numerous activities people could engage in on Saturdays and Sundays.
The four co-hosts feel they’ll have ample time to engage viewers in more comprehensive discussions, as they’ll have three hours each weekend evening to fill. Hylton expresses his hopes that they can delve into the week’s developments and help viewers understand what they’ve been observing. There’s also potential for a lighter tone, he adds. “We don’t want everything to be about doom and gloom,” Hylton says, “we can highlight the positivity in the world, and I hope we contribute to that as well.
Although each participant in the group may hold varying viewpoints, they aim to steer clear of heated debates that the panel discussion format is known for. As Jordan explains, “Our goal is to have an engaging and respectful conversation without causing personal offense.” She further notes, “It’s not necessary for everyone to agree all the time. In fact, that’s not interesting. But we hope for constructive disagreements rooted in mutual respect.
