Movies Are Beginning To "Implode," And Marvel/DC Are Partially To Blame, Brian Cox Says

As a long-time admirer of Brian Cox‘s acting prowess, I find his candid opinions about the state of cinema intriguing and refreshingly honest. His extensive experience in both independent and big-budget films gives him a unique perspective on the industry. While it’s undeniable that Marvel and DC have revolutionized the way movies are made and marketed, his concerns about the oversaturation of these grandiose franchises are valid.

Renowned actor Brian Cox has openly expressed his candid views about the current state of films, attributing the decline to Marvel and DC productions. In an interview at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Cox suggested that cinema is struggling due to the dominance of “spectacular” elements associated with Marvel, DC, and similar productions.

He expressed his concern by saying, “Cinema seems to be in a dire state,” and further explained, “It’s not just struggling, it’s starting to collapse. The narrative is becoming increasingly unclear.” (The Hollywood Reporter reports this statement.)

Cox expressed his thoughts on the recent financial triumphs of Deadpool and Wolverine, noting that such films generate significant revenue to please everyone involved. However, he cautioned that there might be potential repercussions in the future.

As a gamer here, I’ve got some experience with movies too, having taken on the role of William Stryker in X2: X-Men United. So, when opportunities like this come along, it’s like a gaming level-up for some actors. You know, when you see the likes of Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds stepping into these roles, but it’s all about the money and box office success. It’s hard to fault them for it, since they’re making a killing.

Known for being frank and expressive, Cox openly discussed various topics in 2023. Among them were his thoughts on the concept of “woke culture,” which he attributed to millennials. Additionally, regarding his Succession co-star Jeremy Strong’s method acting approach, Cox expressed that it could be quite frustrating.

In an upcoming project, Cox will be part of a significant cinematic universe – The Lord of the Rings. Specifically, he lends his voice to Helm Hammerhand in “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” which is set for release in movie theaters this December.
