Movie Titles Generally Suck These Days, But I Love The Pun-tastic Name Of Chris Hemsworth’s New Submarine Thriller

One aspect of modern Hollywood that I find particularly irksome is the trend towards uninspired and dull movie titles. Instead of originality, we often see franchise blockbusters recycling subtitles or films being named after their characters, which becomes even more grating when they opt for using only first names. This lack of creativity seems to be especially prevalent in a certain sector of the industry.

Due to the monotonous surroundings, the witty title of the upcoming submarine thriller starring Chris Hemsworth, “Subversion,” catches my fancy.

The upcoming feature is being spearheaded by Deadline, and it’s being developed from a script penned by Andrew Ferguson, a veteran on the Black List (an annual compilation of top unproduced screenplays in Hollywood). Patrick Vollrath, who previously worked with Joseph Gordon-Levitt on the confined thriller ‘7500’, is directing this film. The shift from a story occurring high up in the sky to one unfolding beneath the ocean’s surface marks a change of scene for the German director.

According to the deal, the movie titled “Subversion” will star Chris Hemsworth as a Naval officer. In this film, he encounters trouble when a blackmail plot forces him to sail a submarine loaded with contraband into international waters. Throughout the journey, he must quickly strategize and devise methods to circumvent conflicts that endanger his mission.

Amazon Studios, in collaboration with MGM, is supporting the production of the film, which serves as a reunion for the studio and Chris Hemsworth. The Australian actor is prominently involved in the upcoming “Crime 101,” a complex, multi-narrative movie that’s adapted from Don Winslow’s novella. An impressive ensemble also includes Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, Halle Berry, Nick Nolte, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Monica Barbaro, and Corey Hawkins. Co-written and directed by Bart Layton, the film is set to hit theaters in 2026, although an official release date has yet to be announced.

2024 was a bustling year for Hemsworth, where he captivated audiences as Dementus in George Miller’s film “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and lent his voice to Optimus Prime, aka Orion Pax, in the animated series “Transformers One”. With a busy schedule ahead, he’s not only working on the production of “Crime 101” and developing “Subversion”, but also preparing to revisit some beloved characters. He’s set to join the cast of “Avengers: Doomsday,” marking his return as Thor since 2022’s “Thor: Love And Thunder”. Additionally, he’ll collaborate once more with director Sam Hargrave for “Extraction 3”, reprising the role of Tyler Rake.

Due to Chris Hemsworth’s packed calendar, it remains uncertain when he can find a slot for “Subversion” (there seems to be no indication of a production start date in the trade report). However, should this movie eventually come into being, I sincerely hope that no one will propose altering its title.
