Currently, the video game industry plays a significant role within the broader landscape of entertainment, influencing numerous elements of our daily routines. Intriguingly, even seemingly basic mobile applications incorporate elements that initially gained popularity through gaming.
Leading up to the 21st BAFTA Games ceremony, the organizers posed an intriguing question to the audience: “Which game has had the greatest impact throughout history?” Attendees, as well as those off-site, were given the opportunity to cast their votes by completing a designated form. The final tally might come as quite a shock, particularly when it comes to the game that took the top spot.
The following is a list of the 21 most commonly selected titles, each with a more comprehensive description available on the BAFTA site.
This version aims to maintain the original meaning while using simpler and more natural language that flows better in a conversation or casual writing style.

2. – Doom
The groundbreaking game created by id Software significantly contributed to the expansion and recognition of the first-person shooter genre. It fostered the development of modding, speedrunning, and multiplayer deathmatch modes, making them more widespread. Furthermore, the success of Doom inspired numerous imitators who strove to replicate its technical excellence and design creativity.
Back in the day, I can’t forget the thrill when Doom unveiled the blueprint for modern first-person shooters. Every FPS game we enjoy nowadays has its roots traced back to this groundbreaking title.
1. – Shenmue
In an unexpected turn, it was none other than “Shenmue” – a Japanese game launched in 1999 – that took the first place. This groundbreaking title pioneered features now common in the gaming industry, with series like “Grand Theft Auto” and “Assassin’s Creed” adopting them later on.
In its inception, Shenmue stood out as one of the pioneers of open-world, sandbox gaming. The player was immersed in a dynamic environment where each Non-Player Character (NPC) followed their own schedule and activities, requiring us to adapt accordingly. This aspect was further enriched by the game’s day-night cycle and weather system, both of which affected the gameplay experience.
BAFTA notes that Shenmue may have paved the way for games similar to Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, and certain open stages in titles like Uncharted 4 or God of War might have drawn inspiration from it as well. Additionally, the essence of the game is said to be evident in the Yakuza series.
When the game Shenmue was first launched, I immediately got hooked and have yet to find another title that rivals it since then. This game holds a unique and cherished spot in my gaming heart. – Jessie Strife
