During today’s PlayStation State Of Play broadcast, it was announced that Digital Eclipse and NetherRealm Studios are teaming up to release Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection. This collection will bring together a variety of classic Mortal Kombat games from different stages across the series, including titles from arcades, handheld devices, and consoles.
This assortment features various games spanning Mortal Kombat’s past, such as Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat III, and Mortal Kombat IV. The teaser hinted at more titles being included too, but the developers have yet to specify which ones exactly. Here are the games confirmed to be part of this collection:
- Mortal Kombat – 1992: Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear
- Mortal Kombat II -1993: Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, 32X
- Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995: Arcade, SNES, Genesis
- Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995: Arcade, SNES
- Mortal Kombat 4 – 1997: Arcade
- Mortal Kombat Advance – 2001: Game Boy Advance
- Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance – 2002: Game Boy Advance
- Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition – 2003: Game Boy Advance
Each game in the collection boasts updated elements and online functionality, courtesy of rollback netcode. On the PlayStation Blog, it was announced that players will have unrestricted access to all content within these games without requiring any secret codes or memorization. Exactly how this will work remains a mystery for now. Sony has hinted that they’ll reveal more details about the Legacy Kollection prior to its launch later in the year.
Following NetherRealm Studios’ declaration that Mortal Kombat 1 will no longer be in further development following the launch of its Definitive Edition last month, it means that the game has concluded its active development phase. This version of Mortal Kombat served as a reboot for the franchise, with Liu Kang now leading the in-game universe instead of Raiden. Additional characters were introduced through DLC, such as Omni-Man from Invincible, Ghostface from Scream, and Conan the Barbarian.
