Actor Ludi Lin, known for his role as Liu Kang in the upcoming “Mortal Kombat II,” is expanding his roles to include production work. Ludi Lin has taken on dual roles as both lead actor and producer for the upcoming sci-fi thriller “The Unlucky,” directed by Quentin Lee.
The executive producer, Jennifer Price, is marketing the project to foreign film buyers at the Cannes Film Market. Previously, she was a representative for the Los Angeles branch of the Quebec Film and Television Council.
The story ‘The Unlucky’ is based on Lee’s own experiences as an international student in the United States. This Canada-approved tale unfolds around a Yale graduate student from abroad who gets romantically involved with an alluring woman and accepts her Thanksgiving invite, leading him unwittingly into a web of deceit that escalates into sheer terror.”
This version aims to maintain the original’s structure and essence while using more natural, everyday language.
As a passionate movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to delve into the captivating world of ‘The Unlucky’. This film masterfully blends genres in a seductive, adrenaline-fueled journey that leaves me on the edge of my seat – and I can’t wait for you all to join me!
The screenplay was jointly penned by Dennis Escobedo (“Last Summer of Nathan Lee”) and Lee, derived from the director’s unique concept. Lin and Lee will produce it through Lee’s production company, Margin Films Ltd., based in British Columbia.
Lee, who won the 2024 Canadian Screen Award for Best Comedy Special with “Comedy Invasion,” highlighted the film’s relevant messages: “As a previous foreign student in the U.S., I can’t imagine a more pertinent time to share a chilling tale about this topic. Foreign students in the U.S. have historically been blamed and taken advantage of, financially and otherwise, by American institutions and the government.
Price stated, “Quentin has put together an exceptionally talented group to breathe life into this incredibly unique tale. I’m delighted to be involved in the project.
On October 24, Lin’s “Mortal Kombat II” is set to be released globally. His previous works include the original “Mortal Kombat” movie, “Power Rangers” from 2017, “Aquaman” in 2018, and the award-winning Chinese drama “Summer Knight,” which was honored with the Asian Future Best Film Award at the 2019 Tokyo International Film Festival. He has also been featured in Netflix’s “Black Mirror” and “Son of the South,” a civil rights drama produced by Spike Lee under his supervision.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that on May 15th, I’ll be checking out Truce, a fresh TVOD platform debuting at Cannes. This platform is packed with two potential Emmy Award nominees for the year 2025 – it’s exciting! The first title, “Rez Comedy,” is an innovative all-Indigenous stand-up comedy documentary (in the running for Outstanding EbMaster Special, Pre-recorded). The second, “Midnight Snack with Julie Chan,” marks a groundbreaking milestone as it’s the first late-night talk series hosted by a Chinese American woman (nominated for Outstanding Talk Series). I can’t wait to explore these unique offerings!
Truce is set up as a “Fair Trade” video streaming service that leverages TODAQ’s TAPP technology. This empowers filmmakers to have more autonomy over their content, audience connections, and pricing, while also ensuring prompt payments to the production team after each sale.
