According to producer Todd Garner, it seems there may be another installment of Mortal Kombat, as he expresses hopefulness about its development. If the sequel proves successful, his aim is to fulfill the wishes of fans by creating it.
The first Mortal Kombat film managed to be quite successful, earning $84.4 million globally, despite being released at the beginning of a pandemic. Yet, fans weren’t entirely satisfied with it; they felt that it focused too heavily on Cole Young, the editing made the fight scenes less impactful, and surprisingly, it didn’t feature the iconic tournament as promised in its title.
Todd Garner, the producer behind the franchise, has taken into account all the feedback received. This led to the creation of Mortal Kombat 2, a sequel that’s been meticulously thought up and tried out to ensure maximum enjoyment for the viewers. A previous report suggested that a test viewing elicited reactions similar to those for Endgame, and the trailer shattered a significant record.
A threequel isn’t guaranteed, however, and its fate depends on the success of Mortal Kombat 2.
Producer teases plans for Mortal Kombat 3 and spinoffs
In a conversation with FutureBoyWho2, Garner clarified that the insights gained from the initial film helped them pinpoint precisely what they envisioned for the sequel.
As a dedicated fan, I’m sharing my optimism here – let’s not assume this is the final chapter in our beloved game series. Instead, let’s view this as another exciting installment, with fingers crossed for more adventures in the future.
Garner mentioned a future strategy involving certain characters, specifically Scorpion and Bi-Han (also known as Noob Saibot from Mortal Kombat 2). He explained that these characters have progressed over time. Regarding fan anticipation for Kano’s metal eye plate, Garner assured us that this will indeed occur.
Moving ahead, everything remains flexible… If given the opportunity for more films, I truly hope this one performs well so we can explore new possibilities, such as spin-offs or even a continuation of the story. We might get to introduce fresh characters and develop the ones we’ve grown fond of along the way.
Regarding potential spin-offs of Mortal Kombat, Garner and team have an abundance of options: there are currently 25 Mortal Kombat video games, and if you’re not familiar with the storyline, let me tell you it can get quite exciting. The producer aims to delight fans, so keep in mind that if a third movie and/or spin-offs receive approval, you might witness “all those fatalities” as well as additional game stages.
Regardless of how the audience responds to this film, we’re ready to make changes based on their feedback. That’s one of the best things about this – we can communicate with each other, and we’re listening. We plan to use that feedback to ensure everyone enjoys it. Garner clarified.
Among the vast array of combatants available, I’m keeping my hopes up for Ermac, but let’s not forget that Rain is likely to make an appearance in the sequel.
Garner mentioned that there are intentions to include Rain in the series, as he was initially part of the first film’s script but had to be removed due to budget constraints. However, a thrilling battle scene featuring Rain is something they all eagerly wish to execute.”
Or
“According to Garner, plans exist for Rain to appear in the franchise, and he was originally slated for the first movie before cost considerations led to his removal. What everyone really wants though, is to create an amazing fight scene with Rain.
It’s important to note that he isn’t featured in Mortal Kombat 2 at the moment, but if Garner is joking or hinting, then there might be a possibility – it’s more like a wish for him to be part of such a project in the future.
