Warning: Spoilers for Mortal Kombat II
The highly anticipated movie, Mortal Kombat II, will hit theaters on May 8th, after a delay from its original 2025 release date. The Warner Bros. sequel delivers everything fans love about the franchise – iconic characters, costumes, and fighting styles – though it doesn’t include a scene after the credits.
Following up on the 2021 film Mortal Kombat, MK II continues the story of Earth’s heroes as they fight against the ruthless Shao Kahn in the dangerous realm of Outworld. Director Simon McQuoid is back, and Karl Urban joins the cast as the action hero Johnny Cage.
The new Mortal Kombat II movie is expected to be a big hit, potentially earning between $40 and $55 million in its opening weekend – surpassing the original film’s box office numbers. However, unlike the games, the movie doesn’t offer any additional content or scenes after the credits finish.
It’s now typical for action and video game movies to have scenes after the credits. Films like Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog use these scenes to hint at future characters or storylines. However, Mortal Kombat II continues a practice from the first film and doesn’t include any post-credit teases. Instead, the movie builds anticipation for a possible third film through its final action sequence.
Viewers of Mortal Kombat II won’t find any post-credit scenes hinting at future movies. However, the film still has one last surprise for audiences who stay until the very end.
Why You Should Stay For The Mortal Kombat II Credits
Although Mortal Kombat II doesn’t have a scene after the credits, Warner Bros. still offers a fun throwback moment after the movie ends.
After the exciting sequel ends, fans of Mortal Kombat will recognize a classic tune. The iconic “Techno Syndrome” song starts playing, and the Mortal Kombat announcer introduces each character with their name and a look at their weapons and story. It’s like seeing a video game menu come to life on the big screen! Just before the credits roll, you’ll finally hear the famous “MORTAL KOMBAT” scream.
This video game adaptation is fun, but it doesn’t move the story forward or hint at future movies. That’s okay, though – the movie itself already established where the series could go next.
How Mortal Kombat II’s Ending Sets Up A Third Movie
Mortal Kombat II ends with a clear nod to future installments, including a third movie and beyond.
In the final, decisive battle, Earth’s heroes manage to defeat the ruthless emperor Shao Kahn, who wanted to control all worlds. With assistance from the spy Jade, they destroy the Amulet of Shinnok, which restores Raiden’s strength and makes Shao Kahn vulnerable. This allows Kitana, now fighting for Earthrealm, to kill the emperor and become the new queen.
The current champions don’t have much time to celebrate their win. Raiden immediately sends them on a new quest: to find the lost souls of fallen warriors. This will likely lead them to a dangerous fight in the eerie Netherrealm, setting the stage for what everyone expects will be Mortal Kombat III.
This fits with what producer Todd Garner previously said about the possibility of more Mortal Kombat movies. He told FutureBoyWho that the filmmakers are planning to include both new and returning characters if they make future films.
Garner mentioned that they’re considering bringing in characters from past installments, and are open to the possibility of seeing familiar faces return in future movies, as he told FutureBoyWho.
Producer Todd Garner suggested that if Mortal Kombat II does well, the studio hopes to create spin-off films and potentially expand the franchise. Writer Jeremy Slater also confirmed he’s returning to write a third Mortal Kombat movie, as reported by Deadline during New York Comic-Con.
The fate of the Mortal Kombat series rests on how well the new game, Mortal Kombat II, performs. However, it seems likely the game will be successful enough to warrant future installments.
