Mortal Kombat 1 Brings Back Fan-Favorite "Animalities" Fatality Type In Khaos Reigns DLC

As a long-time Mortal Kombat fan, I can’t express how excited I am about the return of Animalities in Mortal Kombat 1! It’s been over two decades since we last saw this iconic fatality type in the game, and I’ve always held a special place in my heart for it.

Over the weekend at Comic-Con in San Diego, NetherRealm Studios’ developers shared insights about Mortal Kombat 1 during a panel discussion. The main topics covered were the latest gameplay features, new guest fighters, and upcoming downloadable content named Khaos Reigns.

Players of Mortal Kombat were taken aback when the developer revealed that a beloved feature, the Animality fatalities, would make a comeback in the upcoming DLC. After being missed for quite some time, this type of fatality was demonstrated in a new trailer, providing fans with an exciting sneak peek of its enhanced version.

Approximately 29 years have passed since the last appearance of Animality fatalities in a Mortal Kombat game, which was first showcased in Mortal Kombat 3 released in 1995. Animalities were among the distinctive fatalities in the series, enabling fighters to metamorphose into animals before delivering the finishing blow to their opponents.

I’m thrilled to share what we have in store for you in the second year of #MortalKombat! Here’s a sneak peek:

In Mortal Kombat, instead of defeating an opponent permanently during an Animality move, players must demonstrate compassion and restore a bit of their foe’s health instead. Once they have triumphed once more, they can unleash this powerful move that in the first installment showcased a more savage, animalistic side with ample gore involved.

The animal transformations confirmed for all characters in the Khaos Reigns DLC trailer are a gorilla, wolves, and what seems to be a puffer fish that detonates enemies internally. Six new playable characters will be introduced in this expansion pack, with three of them being previous characters: Noob Saibot, Cyrax, and Sektor, who will contribute to the game’s fresh storyline.

On September 24, 2024, the Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns DLC is set to release on the listed platforms. This addition brings new storyline elements and three returning characters. For those who own Mortal Kombat 1, the Kombat Pack 2 will follow shortly after the DLC’s launch. The arrival dates for the upcoming guest characters are yet to be announced.
