For over two decades now, I’ve been immersed in the intricate world-building by the modders at Tamriel Rebuilt, expanding upon the grandeur that is Morrowind. Recently, they unveiled their ninth and most extensive expansion yet, titled Grasping Fortune. This colossal update adds a vast swath of the mainland province, reaching as far as its southern border. The pièce de résistance? The bustling city of Narsis, the capital of the cunning House Hlaalu, where dealmaking and wheeling-and-dealing reign supreme.
The city is immense and brimming with missions, personalities, and the intrigues of Grandmaster Athires Hlaalu. Remarkably, it surpasses all playable cities within the Elder Scrolls series in size, as stated by senior developer Cicero during an interview with PC Gamer; it’s larger than Oblivion’s Imperial City, Skyrim’s Solitude, and even Daggerfall’s numerous locales. However, I suspect that Daggerfall’s overall map might still outmatch every other Elder Scrolls game in terms of size.
It took one member of the TR team, specifically Narsis’ exterior designer named Cicero, a full two years to complete their part of the project.
He seemed to be focusing primarily on the Narsis aspect of the project, as he was also dealing with other claims and managing the Tamriel Data repository. However, it took him quite some time, but given that he’s a volunteer, he managed to complete it rather swiftly.
Meanwhile, Narsis’ interiors were an astonishingly larger undertaking compared to other projects. To put it into perspective, the largest city in Morrowind, Vivec, is estimated to have between 150 and 250 interiors, according to Cicero’s recollection. However, Narsis boasts a staggering number of between 600 and 800 interiors – far surpassing anything else in the Elder Scrolls series. This project required more assistance: “It was definitely a collaborative effort to get it completed.
The work on TR is incredibly detailed, almost obsessive, yet delightful – what amazes me isn’t just its massive size, but the attention to detail that makes it feel like the familiar Morrowind we cherish. I haven’t had a chance to play Grasping Fortune yet, but if their past expansions are any indication, it will be filled with elements that perfectly fit into Bethesda’s most distinctive and eccentric game. Personally, I’m hoping for another wizard transformed into a crystal in the new addition.
