More than 2 million people have played/been brutalized by Elden Ring Nightreign in its first 24 hours

The game Elden Ring: Nightreign has just arrived, and currently, approximately 300,000 players are exploring Limveld, striving for statistically improbable triumphs in FromSoft’s revamped roguelike experience. Despite some criticisms that have surfaced during launch (as discussed in our Nightreign review), the number of new players joining the community, now known as Nightfarers, remains steadily high.

Bandai Namco, through the official Elden Ring X account, shared that a staggering 2 million gamers embarked on the journey of Elden Ring: Nightreign within its initial 24 hours. In their own words, “Two million Nightfarers stood up to the darkness in Limveld.” They expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support.

Though the spin-off game may have had just a third of Elden Ring’s initial player base, it’s important to note that this is still an impressive number of players. In fact, the sales from this game would make many Steam-published titles ecstatic, as they could only dream of achieving such numbers throughout their entire lifespan in total.

As a gamer diving into the world of Nightfarers, I’ve noticed that not everyone is having a smooth journey, especially during their early runs. The game’s challenging singleplayer mode, the difficulties in syncing up with matchmade parties, and what feels like unfairly harsh difficulty adjustments have left some players scratching their heads. Consequently, Nightreign has unfortunately earned FromSoft’s least favorable Steam launch rating, with just 64% of early reviews being positive.

It’s important to mention that the Elden Ring launch on Steam hasn’t always been met with glowing reviews. For instance, when the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC was unveiled in 2024, it also faced a “Mixed” rating just a day after its release. This was due to the fact that 61% of the reviews were positive, as players found themselves struggling against its steep difficulty slope.

Approximately a year on, Elden Ring enthusiasts tend to view the DLC (Downloadable Content) known as Shadow of the Erdtree quite favorably: it currently enjoys a predominantly positive Steam user review rating. It appears that FromSoft can recover from missteps, but we’ll need to wait and see if future singleplayer adjustments and possibly a cooperative mode will secure Nightreign a lasting spot in the community’s affection.
