Here’s a breakdown on the latest Offset assaults in Monster Hunter Worlds, covering their applications, combination techniques, and additional details.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, Offset Attacks function similarly to combos like Power Clash and Focus Strike, but they have some distinct characteristics. Unlike those moves, Offset Attacks don’t enable you to switch to the highest damage combo for your weapon class immediately afterward. Instead, the Offset Attack can be followed up with another strike, which can subsequently be boosted into a different combo.
Performing an offset attack can be quite challenging, but it’s definitely worth the effort. This maneuver not only allows you to inflict damage on the monster, but also causes them to stagger, making them momentarily vulnerable.
Similarly to Power Clash, offset attacks in Monster Hunter Wilds also have certain restrictions: here’s what you should know about them.
What Is Offset Attack in Monster Hunter Wilds?
In Monster Hunter, Offset Attacks are unique combinations that let you counter an incoming attack instantly by parrying it, followed by launching another attack. To execute an Offset Attack, perfect timing is crucial. If successful, a short period opens up where you can inflict massive damage on the monster and potentially continue with a charged combo. However, not every weapon type supports Offset Attacks.
To date, it appears that during the Open Beta Test for Monster Hunter Wilds, offset attacks have primarily been made accessible to melee weapons, particularly the heavier ones. Conversely, bows, light bowguns, and insect glaives do not seem to offer offset attacks – at least this is the case in the current beta version.
Here are all the weapons that have access to offset attacks in MH Wilds:
- Great Sword
- Switch Axe
- Hammer
- Hunting Horn
- Heavy Bowgun
Here’s how to perform the offset attack for these weapon types:
Great Sword
Mastering the Offset Attack with the Great Sword relies heavily on precision timing. To enter the offset stance, press and hold the combination of ‘Y’ and ‘B’ buttons simultaneously. Similar to the Charged Slash, the Great Sword’s offset attack can be boosted up to three levels by holding the Y+B combo longer. If you release this combination exactly when a monster strikes you, it results in a successful offset, which you can then capitalize on by pressing ‘Y’. Following the offset attack, you have the option to execute a Charged Slash, which can be concluded with a Triple Charge Slash (TCS). Here’s how you perform the Great Sword’s offset attack:
1. Enter offset stance: Press and hold ‘Y+B’.
2. Charge the attack: Hold ‘Y+B’ longer to increase the power level.
3. Successful offset: Release ‘Y+B’ precisely when a monster attacks you.
4. Follow-up attack: Press ‘Y’ after a successful offset.
5. Charged Slash: Perform a Charged Slash following the offset attack.
6. Triple Charge Slash (TCS): Complete the sequence with a Triple Charge Slash.

Switch Axe
To execute an offset attack with the Switch Axe, switch to its axe mode by pressing the corresponding button. Similar to using the Great Sword, press and hold Y + B, then release just before a monster attacks. If successful, you can follow up with a regular attack or an axe mode finisher by pressing either Y or B. Here’s how to perform the Switch Axe’s offset attack:
1. Switch to Axe Mode.
2. Press and hold Y + B.
3. Release just before a monster attacks.
4. For a follow-up, press Y or B for regular attack/Axe Mode finisher.

Hammer
In the game Monster Hunter Wilds, the Hammer’s offset attack is the most straightforward to execute. This move can be incorporated within the hammer’s regular combo sequence. Notably, the finisher of the Overhead Smash combo typically triggers an offset attack, specifically the Upswing. However, to successfully perform a Upswing and execute an offset, you must precisely time the Overhead Smash combo. If timed incorrectly, the offset will not activate, regardless of your ability to land the Upswing. Here’s how to input the Hammer’s offset attacks in Monster Hunter Wilds:

Hunting Horn
For the Hunting Horn, there’s a unique feature called the “Offset Melody.” You can play this note following the sequence: a “Backward Strike” > “Right Swing” > “Backward Strike” > “Left Swing”. Once you’ve achieved the Offset Melody, press the buttons Y+B+RT to execute an offset attack, ideally just before a monster’s attack connects with you. Remember that you must accumulate the Offset Melody first before performing the offset attack. Here are the steps for executing the Hunting Horn’s offset attack.

Heavy Bowgun
To execute the Heavy Bowgun’s offset attack effectively, ensure your character is in the Ignition State. When you’re in Ignition State, pressing and holding LT + B will let you charge the offset attack. You don’t necessarily need to fully charge it before landing the attack. However, if you do charge it fully, it will deal much more damage and may even cause your target to topple over. Here are the controls for the Heavy Bowgun’s offset combo:
To unleash the Heavy Bowgun’s offset attack successfully, make sure your character is in Ignition Mode. With Ignition Mode activated, press and hold LT + B to charge the offset attack. It’s not mandatory to fully charge it before using it, but if you do, the damage will be significantly higher and there’s a chance your target might fall over. Here’s how to perform the Heavy Bowgun’s offset combo:
