With Wilds out, it’s about time we wrote up a Monster Hunter list for the games!
Since 2004 on the PS2, Capcom’s franchise has been changing and adapting like an alpha predator.
But what games are the best, and are the side games also worth a shot?
Monster Hunter Tier List
Despite potentially setting myself up for trouble, I find it necessary to share this. For those seeking a spectacle, simply step into any online discussion forum and proclaim your preference for ‘insert MH game’ as the best, then sit back and enjoy the ensuing fireworks!
However, it’s important to note that many gamers consider all Monster Hunter games fantastic and worthy of exploration. While their enthusiasm is appreciated, it’s not entirely accurate. This Monster Hunter tier list aims to provide a ranking system, organizing the games from top-tier to least preferred based on various factors such as gameplay mechanics, storyline, and overall player experience.
As a gamer, I’ve got my favorites too, but just because I think a particular game is top-notch doesn’t automatically make it universally so. It’s like some folks saying sand is the ultimate condiment – while it might be their preference, it doesn’t necessarily hold water for everyone else!
Firstly, to get it out there, here is my Monster Hunter tier list:
To ensure full disclosure, I’ve given several of these games a spin, but some have captured my interest more than others. Some even kept me hooked for quite a few hours, whereas others failed to hold my attention for long. With that said, let’s delve into some of the standout features.

Among my rankings for Monster Hunter games, Freedom Unite stands out as the top choice for many reasons. Unlike personal preferences, this assessment is based on facts: Freedom Unite truly excels as the best Monster Hunter game. Originally launched in 2008 as an enhanced edition of Freedom 2, it embodies the quintessential Monster Hunter experience, with Rathalos being a prime example of its captivating atmosphere.

Although you might find this game challenging due to its aged graphics, let me clarify that Monster Hunter Freedom Unite places significant focus on the impact of each move. A single misstep could lead to a crushing defeat. Yet, despite its outdated appearance, it effectively conveys the concept of an ordinary person wielding an oversized sword against a T-rex, which is quite thrilling.
Freedom Unite Is Peak
In addition, I rated Monster Hunter World as A tier and Iceborne as S tier. This is because Iceborne effectively addressed some issues with the original game’s ending, but it’s worth noting that some people believe the games have been slightly watered down compared to their classic counterparts, and they certainly play differently. Nevertheless, I can’t deny that the game offers a lot of enjoyable gameplay, and the mechanic where monsters collide with each other results in thrilling moments.
Without a doubt, if you’re thrilled about Wilds, give Worlds and its additional content a try. While Wilds falls into the B category for this Monster Hunter rank list, I find it quite enjoyable. However, it could use some time to iron out the optimization issues.

For those seeking a more traditional gaming experience, Monster Hunter Rise is another option available. Some players who began with Worlds might find this version less appealing, which could be beneficial. While it’s well-made, there were initial issues, and personally, I find it a bit too visually dynamic.

The Monster Hunter 3 games on PSP and Wii are fantastic titles, with the Wii version offering an especially noteworthy playthrough due to its impressive water monster encounters. Moreover, Ultimate 4 stood out as the top Monster Hunter game on the 3DS, while Generations didn’t quite hit the mark for me.
Additionally, I suggest video game enthusiasts give the initial PlayStation 2 titles a shot. While the first one may be somewhat deficient in certain areas, it boasts an exceptional ambiance, and the second installment significantly enhances this experience.

For less common games, there’s Monster Hunter Frontier, an MMORPG that I found difficult to obtain but proved intriguing. The Monster Hunter Stories are actually quite good standalone JRPGs, and Poka Poka Village offers a charming twist – you direct the cats in this game, with a greater emphasis on village administration.
