‘Monster High’ Live-Action Movie Taps ‘M3GAN’ Director Gerard Johnstone

Gerard Johnstone is moving on to a new movie focused around dolls. The director of “M3GAN” and “M3GAN 2.0” has been chosen to lead the live-action version of “Monster High,” which is being produced by Mattel, Universal Pictures, and Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road label.

In my enthusiasm, let me share that I’m eagerly anticipating a cinematic masterpiece, one that brings to life an innovative narrative. This tale is inspired by Mattel’s cherished fashion dolls, reimagined as offspring of iconic mythical creatures.

Johnstone’s movie “M3GAN” was a massive global hit, earning over $180 million worldwide. He is now directing the sequel, titled “M3GAN 2.0,” which will be released by Universal Pictures on June 27. Known for his unique contributions to genre filmmaking, Johnstone is also responsible for creating the popular haunted house comedy “Housebound” and the critically acclaimed satirical series “The Jaquie Brown Diaries.”

Robbie Brenner, head of Mattel Studios, believes Gerard’s distinctive perspective and genre-mixing approach is ideal for our movie. Our aim at Mattel Studios is to collaborate with leading creators to share innovative, unconventional tales from our diverse collection of brands, and this perfectly aligns with that goal. The ‘Monster High’ series has a vast narrative scope that we are eager to explore in an extraordinary manner with Gerard in command.

Johnstone stated, “With ‘Barbie,’ Mattel Studios showed they’re willing to take daring risks with their intellectual property. The allure of ‘Monster High’ lies in the chance to explore numerous classic monster tales, and collaborating with Akiva, Robbie, and Universal Pictures on this project is a fantastic dream come true for me. I can hardly wait for spectators to venture into the strange, enchanting realm of magical misfits we’re going to bring to life.

For me, ‘Monster High’ holds a special place – my daughters were big fans of those dolls and their messages. Speaking of which, Gerard’s directorial style is bold, innovative, and deeply emotional, making him the perfect fit for this project. You might recognize Goldsman as the Academy Award-winning screenwriter behind ‘A Beautiful Mind’, creator of ‘The Crowded Room’, showrunner of ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’, and writer of ‘Cinderella Man’. He’s currently working on the upcoming sequels to ‘Constantine’ and ‘I Am Legend.’

Back in 2010, I stumbled upon Monster High – a cinematic universe that ignited an unparalleled passion among its viewers from the get-go. The series championed a message that resonated deeply with audiences of all ages: celebrating individuality and the unique qualities that make each one of us special.

In the role of producers, Brenner and Goldsman are working on “Monster High.” The project is being supervised by Arturo Thur de Koós, representing Mattel, and Greg Lessans from Weed Road. For the studio side, Lexi Barta, Universal Pictures’ Senior Vice President of Production, along with Jacqueline Garell, Director of Production Development, are overseeing the project.

Mattel Studios has revealed that they are working on 15 upcoming films such as “American Girl”, “Barney”, “Bob the Builder”, “Hot Wheels”, “Magic 8 Ball”, “Major Matt Mason”, “Monster High”, “Polly Pocket”, “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots”, “Thomas & Friends”, “UNO”, “View-Master”, “Whac-A-Mole” and “Wishbone”, along with “Christmas Balloon”, a heartwarming holiday family drama based on a fresh intellectual property. In addition, Mattel Studios has two live-action films in active production: “Masters of the Universe”, set for global cinema release on June 5, 2026, and “Matchbox”, led by John Cena, which completed principal photography and is expected to hit screens in Fall 2026.

Goldsman is handled by three agencies: Creative Artists Agency (CAA), TFC Management, and Hansen Jacobsen Teller. On the other hand, Johnstone is managed by four entities: Creative Artists Agency (CAA), Key Creatives, Independent Dynamics (ID), and Davis Law Group.
