‘Mojo’ Quirky Rom-Com With Cow as Social Media Star, Set as Debut Feature for Malaysia-U.K. Venture Sympatico (EXCLUSIVE)

As a cinephile who appreciates the rich tapestry of stories that reflect diverse cultures and experiences, I am genuinely excited about Min Lim’s upcoming film “Mojo.” Her extensive background in writing, directing, and live venue producing, coupled with her role as head of operations at Sympatico, promises a unique blend of creativity and production expertise.

The romantic comedy movie titled “Mojo,” featuring an unusual ensemble of characters including a famous cow, is slated to be the debut project from Sympatico, a joint production company based in the UK and Malaysia, which was established last year.

The movie will be helmed by Min Lim, who is not only the chief at Sympatico but also a skilled director. She boasts extensive background in writing, directing, and live event production. Her impressive portfolio features roles like executive producing the multiple-season Asian adaptation of “The Bridge,” serving as showrunner and director for the critically acclaimed Malaysian version of the ITV/Sundance drama “Liar,” and co-directing the revival of the well-loved Malaysian sitcom “Kopitiam.”

The tale of a city-dwelling, driven young man who discovers love and purpose in a humble, rural setting, “Mojo” is penned by Honey Ahmad (“Motif,” “Saladin,” “Walinong Sari”). Director Zahir Omar (“Fly By Night,” “The Bridge”) will serve as creative advisor. This film is a joint production between Sympatico and Mocha Chai Laboratories, with Mocha Chai’s Michelle Chang and Sympatico’s Richard Johns (“Shadow of the Vampire,” “The Liability”) set as producers.

Filming is set to occur primarily at picturesque locations within the northern Malaysian state of Perlis, which boasts a breathtaking landscape. We expect the project to be completed and available for viewing by June 2025.

SC Films International from the U.K. has been appointed as the worldwide distributor for the movie. This same company is also currently managing the international distribution rights for action films such as “On Fire” starring Peter Facinelli (USA), the Singapore-Indonesian production “Orang Ikan”, and the Australian fantasy-horror film titled “Dusk.”

Sympatico proposes “Mojo” as a film appealing to both local and global audiences, featuring a humorous, romantic, and emotional narrative reminiscent of “Ted Lasso” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” Here’s the rephrased synopsis:

Lim stated: “[‘Mojo’] features remarkable and eccentric characters alongside breathtaking settings. It explores common themes like the ‘fish out of water’ scenario and ‘David against Goliath,’ but at its heart, it’s a tale about faith in various forms, sacrifice, and standing up for others instead of personal gain, choosing to work for the greater good.”

Sympatico represents a collaborative venture between the U.K.’s Argo Films and Malaysia’s Double Vision. This union aims to encompass both film and television productions. Last year, they revealed a list of six development projects, promising an authentic Asian representation.

Double Vision, part of the extensive Vision New Media group, boasts a 35-year history in creating a wide range of content including features, dramas, comedies, reality-game shows, talk shows, documentaries, children’s programming, and variety specials. Double Vision houses both production and post-production facilities and has been recognized with an International Emmy nomination for its successful collaboration on the Malaysian-Filipino production “Kahit Isang Saglit.” They are also behind the Asian adaptations of popular global dramas such as “The Bridge” and “Liar.”
