It’s been over six years since the beloved comedy ended, and fans are now wondering if the popular characters Phil and Claire Dunphy from the long-running show might reappear on television, especially with all the reboots happening in Hollywood.
Here’s the latest: while there’s no official word that Modern Family is being rebooted or continued, there’s exciting news related to Julie Bowen, the Emmy-winning actress who played Claire. So far, ABC hasn’t confirmed any plans for the show’s return.
She said she’d love to play Mrs. Dunphy again if the show’s network, ABC, ever decided to bring the character back.

Bowen said he’d be happy to participate, telling USA Today he’d do it ‘in a heartbeat.’ He praised the show’s writing team, explaining that all the best parts of the series originated there. He added that he’d be open to returning if there was a compelling story to tell.
The biggest challenge with rebooting a successful show is simple, but difficult: can the new version create a story that captures audiences like the original? Modern Family ran for 11 seasons and won 22 Emmy Awards, allowing its characters to develop fully over more than ten years, especially considering the show maintained the same main cast throughout its entire run.
As we’ve seen with shows like Hulu’s Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, there are always more stories to explore. This raises the question of whether everyone involved would be willing to continue.
Can Modern Family Mirror Malcolm in the Middle?
Another hurdle is that the actors – including Bowen and Ty Burrell, as well as Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vergara, Eric Stonestreet, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson – have all moved on with their careers, making it potentially difficult to reunite them for a revival.
It’s possible some TV shows are simpler to manage than one with ten actors, but it’s hard to say for sure,” Burrell explained. “You really can’t predict these things.
I’m really excited about the Malcolm in the Middle reboot on Hulu – it gives me so much hope! What’s amazing is that the entire original cast is coming back for Life’s Still Unfair. Sure, Modern Family has been off the air for a while, but that doesn’t even matter when you consider the Malcolm in the Middle crew hasn’t worked together in twenty years! This reunion is going to be incredible.
There’s still a good chance Modern Family could return, but it depends on whether ABC is as enthusiastic about it as the show’s fans are.
