Modder Gets Sega Dreamcast VMU To Play Genesis Games

As a die-hard Sega fan, I’m always thrilled to discover new innovations that pay homage to the rich history of this iconic gaming company. And the latest creation that has left me in awe is the modded VMU that can play Sega Genesis games!

In the past, the Sega Dreamcast‘s VMU (Visual Memory Unit) stood out as an impressive innovation: it was more than just a memory card; it had a built-in screen and control setup, capable of running basic minigames on its own. However, one resourceful modder took things up a notch by developing a VMU that could play Sega Genesis games.

@Gear\_Taro, a user on X or Twitter, shared several videos on the modified VMU in operation. These clips featured the renowned intro of Streets of Rage and gameplay from Space Harrier 2. Although the mini D-pad of the VMU could pose challenges compared to a standard controller, this innovative concept taps into the dreams of many Sega enthusiasts from the past.

An intriguing development, the VMU scene has seen its fair share of unique advancements in recent years. As early as 2022, Dreamwave Enterprises successfully crowdfunded an unauthorized upgrade to the VMU called the VM2. This update boasts a superior screen with backlighting, enhanced resolution, microSD storage, external charging, and PC compatibility, among other upgrades. Meanwhile, Sega announced a new trailer for Sonic X Shadow Generations at Summer Game Fest, set to launch on October 25.
